  1. I’ve made it my goal in life to see as much of the globe as possible. I’m generally on the road for three to four months a year. This doesn’t mean I’m rich (by US standards). I work in Alaska during the summer months in remote villages. Housing and food is paid for, hours are long and overtime is great and it’s generally 5-6 months of nonstop work with no days off. This leads to a really fantastic savings rate and being able to invest. It also brings up the possibility of not having to maintain a typical settled life in a city with rent, bills, car, etc. so, long ago I chose life on the road since I figured this type of opportunity doesn’t happen that often. And I’m too far down the rabbit hole to go back to a typical lifestyle anyhow. I did take a two year hiatus after 11 years living out of my backpack but I’ll be back on the road this winter again thankfully. So what do I do when I travel? I don’t treat it as a “vacation”. It’s more just regular life. Trying to be as frugal as possible. Hoeing around as cheaply as possible (being late thirties I’m for sure getting to the edge of the free hookups with this body let me tell you....). I sometimes settle into a city for a month to be a regular person just wandering around, reading books, taking photos. Sometimes indulge in touristic things. Other times just enjoying the street life and local guys. That’s actually the biggest drive for me. Meeting a few incredible guys to befriend, and hopefully hook up with. Those have by far been my best experiences. And since my time isn’t constricted I don’t feel the sting of missing out. Or the need to pack everything in before I have to go back to Alaska. I spent a month in Havana a few years ago and had my daily routines. I made incredible friends and I felt a lot more connected to that place than just passing through would bring. This winter I’m planning New Orleans for New Years. Then down to Mexico City for a week to meet up with old friends and explore more of that endless metropolis. Then off to Cuba for a month. I really want to spend a couple of weeks exploring eastern Cuba. Then I’m heading to Colombia where I’ll probably spend a month in Medellin and possibly take Spanish lessons. After that I want to be in Salvador Bahia for Carnival. Ideally I would start my Brazil trip in Manaus and finish in Iguazu via the coastline all the way down. Who knows what will happen though. I’m open for it all. And I’m planning on reports from all these stops as well.

  3. You got it! that pretty much been my experience! First, imho, i would never invite someone for a overnight or even a hour at my apt., if i had not met them first at the sauna! e.g. i learned that lesson years ago in Prague when i had found a Czech porn star online and had him come to the hotel based only on what i saw in his films! Big Mistake!! but i digress.... 1) Never make a morning appt., the guys typically get up late morning with lunch being their first meal! so i would plan a 1:00pm lunch date if you want to or just meet at your hotel or apt.

  4. July 2018 Odessa: a lovely town. Hornet was active and I got several messages during my 3-day stay. Bar Libertin was empty. I was told that Arcadia was the place that gays gather but I didn't check it out. Kiev: beautiful churches and interesting side tours. Both Grindr and Hornet were quite busy (Hornet busier) as I got many messages during my stay. 40-70 US dollars typical. Disco Lift is very popular at weekend. Living cost in Kiev is low. Kiev is a good city to visit for fun and for travel. Minsk: quiet comparing to Kiev. I just got a couple of messages in Hornet. There are not many attractions in the city either.

  6. I had a meet up with an acquaintance I have not seen or heard from in twenty five years recently. It was odd and awkward in so many ways. I first had to establish that this fella was no longer using hard drugs. No I have been lied to about this by many addicts but I usually can suss out the truth quickly and make decisions using that information. I don't automatically discriminate against drug users- I just like to know what I am dealing with. This fella had used Crack in the past and that is not a drug with effects that I find pleasant. He told me he had not used Crack in four years. The other issue I wanted to clear up was what he looked like these days. I found his FB profile but there were so many "looks" that I guessed I had to see for myself. Well he is not the young fella I played with from 25 + years ago but I have changed a lot also. So I agreed to meet him. I asked him about going to lunch/ coffee near his place and he agreed_ asking to pick him up first. All of that was forgotten I guess when he asked me in. :( A brief chat ( where he overshared) led to him wanting to roll around which led to a lot of uncomfortable roll play scenarios finally after an hour of me trying to get him off he got up to smoke and I got up to get dressed.and leave. Welllllll now I have a stalker! UGH! I guess on the one hand I should be flattered that someone want to have sex with me for free but on the other hand...well it just is not worth the bother.

  7. The best kinds of people are those who can work hard AND play hard, and leave their work at the office. Shop talk during sexy time or play time is a joy kill as well as a boner killer! I have met some of the most accomplished and interesting people in some of the — shall we say — “most unusual” places! And didn’t find out who they were or what they did sometimes until VERY late during out acquaintance with each other.

  9. Just to be clear, I’m 47. I don’t consider myself “independently wealthy” by US standards. If I felt that I could retire right now and live in the manner which I would like to, and just do something like write or blog or build homes with Habitat For Humanity, I certainly would do it. But I like my stuff (creature comforts). Regarding tourism while traveling, I rarely if ever do touristy things when I travel. Especially in recent years, I try my best, whenever possible and safe, to live like and engage with locals. One will find that in doing so — as Alaskabear also suggests — one’s financial costs will be greatly reduced. My personal politics have always made me despise being viewed as a colonialist, and I try to make my travel interactions reflect that as much as possible. That being said, it’s hard to ignore the attraction and benefits of the US dollar in the places that I most enjoy. And frankly, being a person of color from and in America, it’s always interesting to experience the kinds of privilege that we don’t get when we are in America — ESPECIALLY in the current US climate. It’s almost as if going to other countries for longer and longer periods of time has become a survival technique for me. So, no, it’s not just about “hoeing” or seeing tourist traps for some of us. Regarding boredom, I can easily get bored after just a week back in the States.

  10. i was lucky enough that before i started my own company(2010) i worked for a large multinational company that required i fly 1 to 3 flights a week! which got me exec. plat. status quickly on AA! in the 90’s airlines charged much less if you had a saturday layover vs returning home on Friday! enough so that the company would pick up my hotel and airfare to weekend destinations because they saved $500.+ if i did that rather then fly back to SoCal. on Friday! since our company was on the east coast i either spent the weekend in Miami or NYC!(sometimes Montreal) this was from 1994 to 2010. From 2001 to 2010 i also did Business European trips which introduced me to London’s/Paris’/Barcelona’s scene! Also i discovered Rio in 2001 on a trip with my BF at the time...

  11. Good for you....Living as long as you have and being as established in your career that you are high enough NOT to have to have to request days is a blessing... Congrats again

  12. Regardless of working in an office or from home...I, since I made it personal, chose not to go anywhere for 5 weeks or 9-10 days...Just not how I chose to travel... To all the retired, semi retired, independently wealthy or those like me who work in an office and remotely....DO YOU...You have earned it and can do whatever it is you want to do with YOUR money My question was what does one do when they do go on hoecation for 12-13 days or 5 weeks... I get bored with being a tourist after a certain amount of time regardless if it is Rio or Europe or Africa or any of the other places that I travel to... Some people take one long trip a year, others take 3-4....Some people pay with credit cards while others use buddy passes or companion passes...Do what works for you... Congrats to all the people who can afford to travel and experience life and haven't let their pasts make them bitter or mean or petty....I am clear on the demographics of most of the gents in this forum which is why I asked what does one do with such long trips... Everything is not a knock or negative...

  13. Its amazing how many people ask the same questions over and over again without bothering to read any of the posts... Rates for sessions in the saunas have not varied much since I started going to the saunas about 15 years ago... The only thing that has changed is the exchange rate with the real going appreciating and depreciating... Boys have come and gone (while some are still there) but the rate for a session has always been about the same with some variances based on... How in demand the guy is....Is he a rockstar? How much chemistry one has with the said guy he hires How often you are in the saunas Do you speak Portuguese? How often do you hire the said guy... 100R is about the basic rate for a session...And they don't charge by the hour (rooms arent available for an hour unless you pay more)

  14. It is based on factors that vary depending on the garoto, the customer, and both parties motivation, how good a negotiator you are, etc. But a afternoon is non productive time for them so pay should not, imho, be over $200.R, about the same if you were ordering in off Netgay! I would not pick a “nice” restaurant unless you really want to go to it! the guys really don’t seem to care whether it is MacDonalds or Sequiera Grill, unless you are offering Fogo de Chao!

  15. I don’t think there is a going rate for that, it is too rare to have a fixed-agreed-by-most price. Some will tell you 150 per hour, but 300 minimum, And some will give you their entire night for 200 total. As long as you pay for everything else of course.
