  1. Just keep in mind that besides the terrible laws in Thailand that protect the image and the institution of the monarchy, there has also always been extreme social pressure to preserve, protect, and revere it. Even when you go to see a movie, before the film starts theatres all play the King's anthem, and everyone stands in silence. To not stand would have always(?) been inconceivable.
  2. We may still not know the final results of our election for days. What we do know is that Trump was not repudiated, despite his lies, despite his crude behavior, despite his poor handling of the pandemic. Conventional wisdom has informed us that when high voter turnout occurs Democrats win. Conventional wisdom can now stick it up its ass. This country is a majority bigot, racist, xenophobe, and ignorant nation. Let’s come to term with this fact. The nation is no more. It’s a rigged game. And we lose. Even if Biden gets 271 electoral votes, his administration will get nothing done, get all the blame, and is doomed because the American people are too stupid to comprehend reality. The Senate will continue to obstruct (or bend over and take it if the Idiot remains). The Supreme Court is a rubber stamp. The House will be a shrill, useless entity. We will have no international allies except for Brazi, Israel, Poland, Hungary, the Philippines, North Korea, and our new masters, Russia. The so-called confederacy won the long game.
  3. The only places I have heard talk of Democratic mis-deeds such as stealing the election are the snippets from FOX NEWS posted on progressive news sites and on the conduit for Trump press releases, the Daddy's site. Both irrelevant, both ridiculous, both dedicated to the destruction of a functioning democratic process.
  4. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/10/27/upshot/biden-trump-poll-quiz.html?action=click&module=Editors Picks&pgtype=Homepage This is fun.... I scored pretty high!
  5. Have you seen this anywhere? A right-wing form of government that opposes liberal democracy, Marxism, socialism, and anarchism, and attempts to forge national unity under an autocratic leader with a totalitarian program advocating stability, law and order, and more and more centralized power, claiming all of this is necessary in order to defend the homeland from internal as well as external enemies, and to respond effectively to economic instability. The mobilization of a mass base through deliberately constructed fear and hatred as preparation for armed conflict and permanent war. An appeal to patriotic nationalism. The supremacy of military and police power, and the militarizing of all aspects of society. The agitation of “popular” movements in the streets, apparently spontaneous (but in reality well-funded and highly organized) based on bigotry, intolerance, and the threat of violence, all of it fueled by the demonization of targeted, distinct racial, religious, or gendered vulnerable populations and the creation of convenient sacrificial scapegoats who are repeatedly blamed for every social or economic problem people experience. Disdain for the arts, for intellectual life, for science, for reason and evidence, as well as deep contempt for the necessary back and forth of serious argument or discussion. The suppression of labor and the protection of corporate power. Rampant cronyism and corruption. Protectionist and interventionist economic policies as corporations are entangled with the state. You have? It's the textbook definition of fascism.
  6. Back on topic, with the writings of James Baldwin, from way back in 1971, as he writes to Angela Davis in an open letter: One way of gauging a nation’s health, or of discerning what it really considers to be its interests—or to what extent it can be considered as a nation as distinguished from a coalition of special interests—is to examine those people it elects to represent or protect it. One glance at the American leaders (or figure-heads) conveys that America is on the edge of absolute chaos, and also suggests the future to which American interests, if not the bulk of the American people, appear willing to consign the blacks.
  7. if anyone needed an additional reason to never visit the daddy's site... even out of curiosity... there is an impassioned argument going on there between supporters of the child who killed 3 people in kenosha and those who believe he needs to be held accountable for his actions "His actions were a clear cut case of self-defense" yikes. some things can't be "unseen".
  8. You do realize, I am sure, that the loudest and most obnoxious of the right wingers posting on the politics forum there have no authentic connection to our community and have landed on the site only to disrupt it
  9. You are wiser than I am, my friend..... That site should be off limits to fair thinking individuals across our land. The person who, by the way, went on to post this: Do you really think that all these protests after these incidents are going to make race relations better in this country??....do you think that only one side is guilty? Don't you think that certain black people do stuff that helps those racist stereotypes to continue?? goes by the nickname of Gaothanear and is unknown to me, so is probably just a reincarnation of one of the other racists on that board. May he experience eternal agony.
  10. And as if we needed further proof of Mr. Kesslar's helpful assertion, I made the fatal error of browsing the daddy forum just now and came across this piece of brilliance: I was so happy when Obama got elected since I though all that crap about black people getting discriminated was going to end.....but now is even worse than before. I dont understand if black people are SO discriminated how come they dominate all the track and field sport events, the basketball competitions, in MMA, Bellator most of the time black fighters dominate and will win over caucasians, asians and first nations fighters .....where is the discrimination here???....they are there and earn BIG $$$ because they are GOOD at it!!!....they are strong, have stamina and have better reaction times than the others...... I am sure that if I reacted the same way those poor black guys did when they got arrested I would also get the same treatment......but it wont be in the news..... But, then again, I am sure there are good people.... on both sides!
  11. not to bring up sore topic, but if you want to see examples of victim blaming in these matters, you can stay local and check out the usual suspects at the daddys forum who proudly wear their racism for all to see.
  12. From the New York Times: WASHINGTON — The school attended by President Trump’s son will not fully reopen in September out of concern over the coronavirus pandemic despite the president’s insistence that students across the country be brought back to classrooms in the fall. St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, a private school in Washington’s Maryland suburbs, said in a letter to parents that it was still deciding whether to adopt a hybrid model for the fall that would allow limited in-person education or to resume holding all classes completely online as was done in the spring. The school will decide early next month which option to follow.
  13. Let's hear it from the teachers themselves: American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten said: “Our blueprint serves as a stark contrast to the conflicting guidance, bluster and lies of the Trump administration. The input of educators and healthcare workers, as well as parents, is crucial in making any reopening plan work. They are the eyes and ears, and are indispensable in making any plan work safely and effectively. We hope this blueprint will be the start of a real discussion on reopening schools, universities and other workplaces that allows our workers and families not only to dream of a safe and welcoming future, but to realize it.” To gradually reopen, we need to: Maintain physical distancing until the number of new cases declines for at least 14 consecutive days. Reducing the number of new cases is a prerequisite for transitioning to reopening plans on a community-by-community basis. Put in place the infrastructure and resources to test, trace and isolate new cases. Transitioning from community-focused physical distancing and stay-in-place orders to case-specific interventions requires ramping up the capacity to test, trace and isolate each new case. Deploy the public health tools that prevent the virus’ spread and align them with education strategies that meet the needs of students. Involve workers, unions, parents and communities in all planning. Each workplace and community faces unique challenges related to COVID-19. To ensure that reopening plans address those challenges, broad worker and community involvement is necessary. They must be engaged, educated and empowered. Invest in recovery: Do not abandon America’s communities or forfeit America’s future. These interventions will require more—not less—investment in public health and in our schools, universities, hospitals, and local and state governments. Strengthening communities should be a priority in the recovery.
  14. Trump decided a few weeks ago that he could help his prospects for re-election if he could get schools across the nation to reopen fully, regardless of the state of the pandemic in their community, regardless of the risks to students and staff. He has threatened to cut off federal funding to schools that refuse to reopen fully, and he proclaimed that he and Pence were pressuring the CDC to weaken its guidelines. At first, the CDC held firm, urging schools to practice social distancing, to require personal protective equipment, and not to reopen unless all safety precautions were in place. No longer. It changed the tone of its guidance, now stressing the necessity of reopening over the importance of safety. Now the CDC sings the song that Trump, Pence, and DeVos want to hear. The agency issued a full-throated call to reopen schools in a package of new “resources and tools” posted on its website that opened with a statement that sounded more like a political speech than a scientific document, listing numerous benefits for children of being in school and downplaying the potential health risks. It published the new guidance two weeks after President Trump criticized its earlier recommendations on school reopenings as “very tough and expensive,” ramping up what had already been an anguished national debate over the question of how soon children should return to classrooms. While children infected by the virus are at low risk of becoming severely ill or dying, how often they become infected and how efficiently they spread the virus to others is not definitively known. Children in middle and high schools may also be at much higher risk of both than those under 10, according to some recent studies. Thanks to Trump, the public can no longer trust the impartiality of the CDC. Under pressure, it revised its guidelines to please the president. Science will not “get in the way” of Trump’s political campaign. Any student or teacher or other school personnel who dies because of a premature opening will be blood on the hands of Trump, Pence, DeVos, and the CDC. The CDC and its director, Dr. Robert Redfield, are hereby enrolled on our nation's Wall of Shame.
