I can sign as he say that they have more precautions in place in Rio and São Paulo And they do in orange county California where I live! everyone is tested with a Thermometer at every bar, restaurant, and  sauna I was at! Everyone on urge street was wearing masks in Ipanema and Copa!

So am looking to book a trip from UK to Rio for early next year. Hopefully UK are removing Brazil from the red list next week (and Brazil should reciprocate).

Was looking to travel 15 February to 2 March. The carnival starts 25 February - would this be a good time to go?

Won’t have been to Rio for 2 years, would prefer to stay in hotel in Copacabana, and don’t speak Portuguese. I like going saunas and the bars sometimes. Like taking guys hone from sauna overnight to hotel and taking to beach next day. So think this might be too busy a time to go?

Think someone wrote about carnival time in Rio - prices guys charge before, during and after carnival. Not really after the carnival experience as I’ll be a solo traveler.

Any advice on when the go?

If you're not going for the Carnival experience, I suggest you avoid overlapping with it.  Prices go up a lot, traffic is impossible, everything is crowded.  In particular, since there are so many tourists, there is stiff competition for escorts and prices can be as much as 2 or 3 times higher.

So, if you don't care about Carnival, go in April or May instead.  The weather is not as hot but it's still a wonderfully warm 25-35 degrees.  Beaches and clubs are still packed with people but nothing like Carnival, where you can't even make your way through the crowd.

That said, Carnival *is* a unique experience, so if you don't mind the crowds, the heat, the noise, the traffic etc - then your plan sounds just fine.

Streptomy is absolutely correct, plus crime is at it's highest during that time. Go a couple of weeks before and see the rehearsals.

Atlantico Copacabana is where I usually stay and have for years. I'm going next week and is 20usd per night with breakfast buffet for 2. No problem bringing guys to the hotel, can't say that for many places in Rio....

Thanks for quick reply.

I have two weeks leave to use up before 1 April. And already have a holiday to Spain end of March, so kinda stuck when I can take them. Suppose delaying till after carnival will be a good idea. I can remember readings the guys charge less before carnival to get spending money, or charge less after carnival to make up some money. Anyone know about this?

This AND before Christmas....most people are concentrating on shopping but usually 1 or 2 days after Christmas, it gets crazy until the middle of January....in my experience.

Hello, after 2 years I will be able to go back to Rio next year...so happy and looking forward...I would like to visit an other City, too. And i am not sure wether I should go to Recife, Salvador or Fortaleza. As I will go to RIo in July (Winter there) I would like to make sure that I will have some days at beach..

So I would like to get the best combination of: beaches, nice city.architecture ...and Saunas with Garotos :D

Which city would u recommend?

There are many others with much more knowledge about Brazilian destinations, but I LOVED Salvador.

How much to just have boy for companionship in the sauna?

The short answer must be “It depends on the person you find attractive”.

A rapid solution would be to ask the guy you like how much he needs to earn that evening, and offer to pay him that for his exclusive attention.

A new guy may be very happy to hang out with you all evening with you paying for all drinks etc as well as the fee you agreed with him beforehand.

An experienced guy, who has regular clients, may not want to spend much of the evening with you. He may not want to risk disappointing his regulars by being exclusively with you.

Maybe you should ask this question of a guy you really like and want to spend extended time with. Just decide what you’re willing to pay and how long you’d like to be there, so you can ask something like ‘How much will it cost if we have 2 programs and spend 2 hours extra just talking, drinking etc?’

Asking open ended questions are not a good idea, in my experience.

Offering anything other than a standard amount, without knowing the quality of the service isn't good either.

Some guys are happy with 1 programa minimum per night, others want to try to get more, if it seems the night will bear it.

If you plan on taking the guy to a suite but want to chat and have some drinks, just say so. Most sitting with a customer are doing just that, for the price of a programa.

My deal is, I don't like going to suites, I prefer in my apartment. I explain this and tell them they are welcome to sit with me but when we're ready to go, we go together, 200 reis in my room....sometimes we go to eat before or after. Some will try to walk around looking for another customer, others will stay sitting or go smoke with their friends or play Bingo on those nights.

To answer your question, the guys you see sitting with someone are just trying to "close the deal"....they're not being paid extra 99% of the times.

You could also luck out (sarcasm) on a boy that is from out of town that conveniently overstays his welcome at your place because he either doesn't have a hotel booked for the night or he doesn't want to travel far to his accommodations on the outskirts of the city. You think it's cool at first that you have this hunk in your bed, but you eventually realize you can't get rid of him. Sure, after overstaying the sex is now free, but your still on the hook for meals and maybe a little extra if he's low on cash. But soon you realize that this guy is hitting you up everyday to hangout in a way to discourage you from seeing other guys. His thinking is, if your with me there's no need to have sex with anyone else and spend all your cash on me. These are the guys that go to the sauna and ignore all the clients because at the end of the night they know they are going home with you. Additionally, other GPs won't approach you because this guy will give them shit if they do. This is one reason you see some GPs spend all night with one client. These guys pay little attention to the other clients because they have a client as their guaranteed meal ticket. Why would the boy chance going with another client if he knows that he's been with that guy before and he knows his kinks, fetishes, and he isn't treated like trash and is well compensated. That guy knows he could probably hustle and get 3 or 4 (huge maybe) clients and possibly make more money, but why work so hard if you can get one client that gives enough to be comfortable. When I had GPs spend days on end with me it usually starts off with them overstaying and inviting themselves to things I was going to do. I certainly didn't pay them for that time and I imagine it is the same way with the other clients as well. They have clients they either like to spend time with more or that they think are more lucrative over the long-term. Sometimes it's a slow night and that client seems like the best option to get paid so they stick with that client hoping for that payday.

Most often (at least in my circles and observations), if the garoto is sitting with / spending time with a client at the bar or at a table for an extended period of time (let’s use, more than 20 minutes), then he’s most likely being compensated for that time — not trying to close a deal for the suite. Some clients (like you, @floridarob) don’t even like using suites or having sex in saunas and eventually plan to leave with a GP. Other clients might just want a “date” with a hot guy without any sex at all. It depends — I think I may have seen it all! But a good rule of thumb is the 20-minute rule to “shit or get off the pot”. Cut a deal with the garoto within that time frame or part ways. A drink can be finished in that time period.

I've seen this phenomenon a few times and wondered. It's hard to believe they can't sneak off or be excused to make a few extra reais. Most cabine engagements take only 10-15 minutes.

I wasn’t sure where to put this so I’ll just add it to the main topic as an FYI. I’m in Rio now and have been having trouble using my credit card (a Chase Sapphire visa). I’ve used this card here on previous trips without any problems, as recently as November 2022. The newest model of handheld payment terminals in Brazil seem to have issues with Chase, and tap-to-pay payments will not go through. To make matters worse, when you try to insert the card as a back up method of payment, the card is too thick to go in the slot on the terminal. I called Chase and they don’t even see the attempted transaction, so there is some sort of disconnect between them and the payment terminals right now. 202 seems to have the new terminal, because my card would not fit, and I know it did as recently as November.

Anyhow, I was able to get around this by using my phone’s mobile wallet and tap-to-pay. It worked fine with the same Chase card that way. I just wanted to mention this because those Chase cards are very popular among American travelers. So just bring a backup card or be ready to use your mobile wallet if you use Chase as your travel card.
