Is there thread on bathhouse Portuguese? I am going to visit Rio next month and try to learn some practicle phrases.

I am not aware of a thread that discusses terms for use in Rio saunas. However, there might be some phrases posted on the site.

I assume this will be your first trip to Rio.

If you have read the postings in this site, you know that Rio currently has only two “rent boy” saunas. I assume that you will be visiting one of the saunas and that is why you want to learn “bathhouse Portuguese”

As one who has traveled more than one hundred times to Brazil, let me offer a little comfort for you in knowing that it really does not matter that you do not speak Portuguese for visiting rent boy saunas. I know that seems difficult to believe, but it is so.

Countless visitors to Brazil’s rent boy saunas speak little to no Portuguese. Few, if any, have a problem despite not knowing the language or even a few phrases.

Let me suggest that after you enter one of the saunas, you not allow the first garoto (rent boy) who approaches you to convince you to go to a private room with him.

Before you go alone in a room with a garoto, first get settled in at the sauna and look around a while.

When you feel comfortable after a “walk through” of the sauna, you should change into sauna attire. You will be furnished with a locker key (and number) plus a couple of towels and shower clogs when you enter the sauna.

As I said above, even though it seems difficult to believe, despite your not knowing any Portuguese, you will still be able to negotiate with garotos. Most of them are really nice guys and are not difficult - most are very friendly even if it is only through smiling and body language.

The only thing that I caution is that once you begin a “somewhat” conversation with a garoto, be certain that you both understand the agreed price for the encounter.

One simple way to confirm the monetary agreement is to take a piece of paper and write down the agreed amount. That way, there will not be any misunderstandings after you and the garoto leave the private room.

There are some terms that I could tell you but you really don’t need them.

There might be other posters who read your question and my response and might offer to list specific and graphic phrases for you.

You said you will be visiting Rio next month, which is summer time in Rio. The weather will be great for beaches but the saunas will be hot.

Have a great trip.

While I don't claim to be a expert... :-) But As someone who had been "visiting" Brazilian saunas 4 or 5 times a year since 2001, I agree that Mvan's and OZ's advice is right on the mark! (Especially Mvan's advice about not going with the first guy that talks to you on your first visit to a sauna,)
To amplify what OZ posted:

Activo/Passivo? = Top/Bottom? (if they say active liberal it means they are mostly a top but will bottom)

Quantos Real? = How many dollars?

Voce Bom Beijos? = are you a Good Kisser? (this question will usually result in a on the spot demonstration!

In addition to what my fellow posters presented, I'd like to suggest that you visit http://www.daddysreviews.com, join for free and go to the Latin America or related forum. Trilingual gave some salient advice for first time visitors a while, while back. It still appears relevant and useful, too!

I'd like to add that many of the sauna guys will approach you and ask if it is your first visit and from where do you come? The guys, more than likely, will ask if you'd like a massage. After my fifth or sixth visit-- I have smiled upon hearing this "script!" But that does NOT mean that I have not disrespected the guys or have NOT gone with the one or ones of which I've found interest!

Go and enjoy and remember always to allow your "BIG HEAD" to do the thinking for you!

Read! Read! Read! and then Use! Use! Use! After your adventures please report back here. I, for one, always enjoy reading the travel experiences of one!

Thank you all for the replies. They are very helpful. Besides those useful words, I guess i will bring my smartphone as well.It requires network for speech input. But it can translate and talk offline.

several of the saunas have Wifi (meo mundo doesn't). I think it is 117 but it may be one of the other ones, that doesn't give out a password as their wifi is supposedly only for employees but if you tip the bartender you can get it! the English/Portuguese language apps work well and can be a big help for you.

I am also going down in January.

**one point about Axiom's reference to Daddys forum, trilingual's original posts going back to 2000 was the impetus for many of us to go on our first trip to Brazil, and was very good and useful! but most of the info/advise is very dated, a example, if it references a specific sauna(Rogers) or bar/restaurant(Corujinhas) for example, they have been closed many years or are no longer gay(Corujinhas). Things can change very fast, So check before you make take a taxi there to find out it isn't what you thought.

any questions, this is the place to ask before you go!

You will have a great time!

I agree with the above very helpful information.

However, the web address in the Axiom post is not correct. The web address that is given is a link to reviews of various escorts, in general.

The web address you want is:

Completo = Tops and Bottoms

Ativo Liberal = Does everything except gets fucked. OR Ativo will not perform oral. Ativo Liberal will perform oral. HOWEVER; In the cabine/suite, many if not most will bottom, the boys just do not want the other guys to know that they are willing to be passive.

Voce beija bem? Do you kiss well?

Instead of asking how much they want and then get the standard answer of 80, 100 or more. Tell them that what you want and how much you will pay. I have a friend who speaks basically no Portuguese who just says "80Reais com gozada." 80 Reais with cumming.

For me I always talk with them for a couple minutes, check out the merchandise, see if I like the way they kiss and then at Meio Mundo always say "60 ta bem?" "Is 60 good?" Sometimes they'll say vamos(let's go) or ok. Or sometimes they will ask for oitenta(80) or setenta(70).

Cumming isn't important to me = Gozanda nao me importante.

Wonderful thank you. I have watched you work, and you are a wizard with the boys as your Portuguese is amazing. I wish I was 1 percent as fluent and I do think this makes a big difference.

How do you say: Get me off quick and you'll have time for more customers? ^_^

That might make them happy to know I can be in and out in less than 5 min if they are really good. ^_^

In spite of your "trust component"-- make sure that all valuables are "out of sight" when you have guests in your hotel room or in your apartment. That even means expensive cologne if you wear it. Advice given to us/me previously!

Making conversation is important to me. It makes me feel more related to the guy. I went to Russia, Turkey and hungary earlier this year. Most boys i met can speak functional english.

While I agree with your sentiment, You will meet few guys in the saunas that can speak functional English outside of "Let's Fuck" "OMG" and "Let's Go"! :-)
