Yesterday Douglas Stuart won The Man Booker Prize 2020 for his first novel, Shuggie Bain. I looked forward very much to reading Shuggie Bain, but when I finally got the book, I found that it was mostly unreadable. It's very bleak reading. Nothing about the style of his short story (I haven't read The Englishman) turned me off, it just wasn't a particularly captivating style like say Colm Toibin or Dennis Cooper.
