Facebook Down

Frankly I wouldn't touch "Facebook" with a bargepole. In my last job as Chief Executive (silly, grandiose title for a basic management job) of a small Hospice charity in the UK I employed a young man as adviser on communications and publicity on a campaign to increase our fundraising income by over 30% in one year (we achieved over 50% increase) and he advised me to set up an account on Facebook. I had no idea what he was talking about. The next day I went down to lunch in the staff dining area and the cook said she was really upset with me. I asked her what I had done to upset her and she told me she had asked to be my friend on Facebook and I had ignored her. I immediately told my staff to delete this stupid account and never looked at Facebook again.

Thats a really funny story haha. Im guilty of this too, i often wonder if people are offended but then again, i have been really inactive in FB. By that i mean i dont really update or post myself, but i do use it for informations etc. This is true for all social media accounts i have, im more of a lurker, not really looking to socialize on social media haha.

I could not agree more. Some years ago my bf finally persuaded me to join. Perhaps stupidly, I replied to the initial questions asked - names of my school and university. Within seconds I had more than 150 likes from people I had absolutely no idea who they were. Not even one from anyone I would have called a friend. If this is facebook, I decided, it's not for me. Within minutes I had cancelled the membership and have never once had any desire to rejoin.

But it pisses me off mightily that some companies now assume everyone is on facebook. So increasingly I find that they have cancelled their websites and instead post information only on facebook. I have found a way around some of this, but I'll happily take my business elsewhere. This is especially true given the revelations over the weekend about facebook's policy of promoting inciteful and hateful posts since it makes more money that way. Governments should have investigated the social media apps long before now to ensure that such hideous practices are rooted out. This has nothing to do with free speech. It is about responsibility and destroying some lives.

I hate to break it to all of us oldies here lol - but facebook is SO last year and very few young people use as so much anymore. Instagram and Twitter ( and a few others that I'm not up on) seem to be the order of the day now for the young hip crowd apparently.

Oh and re people getting offended by me not "friending" them I too have to always tell them that actually I rarely use Facebook and hardly ever think of opening it......but that IS of course only to those who I wish not to accept the friend request from as of course they'll never know the difference - hopefully ( and actually nor do I care even if they do work it out usually too is the main reason ) !  lol

Oh and for those who think they "deleted" their profile from Facebook etc, you might want to just jump on there someday and check that again as Facebook are famous for UN deleting you a few months after you request it and you then have to do it again, I believe it may even be in their T&C's that they can.  They of course play that as "just checking you were sure" type thing - but that's also why their membership numbers stay high when a lot of people you talk to now wouldn't go near it with a barge pole as the data they scrape from your account is genuinely scary sometimes.

If you have never gone into your account settings and looked in your privacy settings at the amount of very detailed info about you and your likes and viewing habits etc that they've already taken from your use of facebook ( and Whats app or instagram which they own too of course and now even cross share all that data too !) you should, again it's quite scary and is enough to make most people say "screw that' and press the "delete my profile" button......which they then proceed to reinstate behind your back again later anyway it seems !

FACEBOOK - the spawn of the devil when it comes to data scraping  - but, we can't even complain as they (sort of ) tell us they're doing it and we actually click a button to LET THEM so I guess we're just as bad for encouraging and allowing it to happen.

PS yes I still use facebook so Im in no position to talk ! :)

I think it's Snapchat and TikTok for the youngsters these days. FB is all GenX, Boomers and some MIllenials now. IG is still fairly popular too. Although I think FB is popular generally in some countries. Countries that are new to the internet - Myanmar famously - for example. Twitter is just politics and porn.

I'm going to try and take a break from FB to see if I can break the addiction.

Thank you! I didn't consider myself a youngster until your message. I am an avid Snapper and TikTok'r. I spend hours on them each day and my videos are view by thousands.

jk I don't fucking understand either one of them. But, I did like the thought of being young again. My current boyfriend does both of those daily and loves it. I just don't get it. Perhaps I never will.

I stopped using facebook about 5 years ago after over ten years of use because I was starting to get grown adult friends get upset with me over "not liking" one of their posts. Noped out and I couldn't be happier.

Well contrary to some of you I have found most of my Thai friends still heavily use FaceBook, and I also find their FaceBook Messenger good for 1:1 chats, either just talking or, if we are both feeling horny then ......

TikTok is harmless fun, although some of those guys have accumulated many millions of 'likes'.

And I do find Twitter great for porn, and even though there is 2.20min max on clips, their 'benefits' accrue haha. But I also find their porn more spontaneous and 'real' than those of the established porn sites, especially if it is a boy I have already met, or a Pattaya boy that I want to meet! 😂

They also use Line and Instagram a lot, although those are lost on me.

Interesting fact: Bangkok is Facebook's most active global city with over 30 million users! In a city with not more than 10 million, why on earth do people feel they need multiple Facebook accounts?

Many reasons to have multiple accounts, but u suspect main reason is games or used to be games.
