This is my first time to Brazil but I have been to many other Latin American countries and live in one.

There is one thing that was a surprise...the incredible street poverty. I have seen a lot of poverty in the world and frequently it is concentrated to certain neighborhoods usually. This seems to be everywhere, here in Republica at least. But, it's in my city of Portland, Oregon just in tents and somewhat hidden I guess.

I do not feel safe walking at night in the area...but I don't need to anyway.

There are two gay bars in this same block and several restaurants and grocery stores nearby...I also use uber and went to a nice Japanese restaurant...Uber works great for traveling. Since I don't speak the language a taxi is difficult especially after hearing all the chatter when a native was dealing with them, lol. I'm in Setin Downtown Republica. There is also a subway entrance in the same block.

Across the street at the Park, there are 2 little bridges, there are lots of cruising there, including hustlers, and costumers, just dont go there at night.

There is a japanese rodizio (buffet ) Toshiro , about 70 reais included everything ,  I walked there with no problem, but Uber is cheap.

Take a free walking tour at the entrance of the Metro, its worth it. They have free English tour.

I stay in Setin or a hotel nearby for years....one thing I've learned is SP is like the movie Gremlins, nothing good happens after mid-night, water or not  lol

Plenty of good restaurants to go to after the sauna, alone or with someone from the sauna (my preference) then back to the room to hang out, or order ubereats to the room.

I hope you can make good conversations with your companion from the sauna, assuming you both understand each other's language well enough to converse anything interesting while you guys enjoy a candlelight dinner.  And/or you are actually interested in his grandma's surgery and her hospital bills. 🤣

I live in Mexico, Speak Spanish and I lived in Brasil in about 2004....I speak Portuguese. The conversations, depending who I'm with, revolve around anything from politics to Michael Jackson music, travel, dreams of making a business and sexual fantasies or their stories from working at the saunas 😲. Anyone that knows me, knows I'm not a Santa Claus nor do I give/send money to guys for no reason.

You hit the nail on the head.  Treating the guys as real people w real feelings vs sex-objects only, makes all the difference almost 100% of the time.  In other words, you reap what you sow.

I went back to Lagoa on Tuesday night and discovered 3 twinks to my surprise.
