Gays "Enemies of Islam" - Malaysian Prime Minister

Malaysia is bracing itself for a General Election, and bashing the LGBT movement is clearly part of the government’s strategy.

The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community along with liberalism and pluralism were today branded as enemies of Islam by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in front of a crowd of over 11,000 imams and mosque committee members from across the nation.

“LGBTs, pluralism, liberalism ― all these ‘isms’ are against Islam and it is compulsory for us to fight these,” he said.

Mind you, even the opposition leaders are hardly supportive. This from the virulent anti-government opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim, who has been hounded by successive governments after being sacked from his post as Deputy Prime Minister in 1997 by his mentor, then Prime Minister Dr. Mahatir Mohammed.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim agreed at a High Court hearing today that homosexuals should be discriminated against to protect the sanctity of marriage, but pointed out that archaic laws should be reviewed to prevent innocent people from being punished.

Mind you, Anwar was speaking in court where he is yet again on trial, this time defending a defamation suit brought against him by the ruling party’s UMNO organization and its mouthpiece Utusan Malaysia, which had in January accused the opposition leader of being a gay rights proponent, claiming he said so during a BBC interview early this year. How utterly petty can these UMNO people get? This is worse than some of the gutter politics employed in the US election :o

Yet, with this sort of rhetoric, what hope can there be for any change for Malaysia’s LGBT community after the election?

The trouble with certain leaders, is they cannot just mind their own damn business and accept than non-believers will follow their own chosen lifestyles.

That's why I would quite like to see the end of religion.

If they keep up this sort of rhetoric, one wonders how many gays will give up on Malaysia as a tourist destination. Given that Malaysia has been courting the Arab world for tourist dollars with considerable success, maybe they don't care.
