What's new in Indonesia

Recommended Posts

So, I was looking through the few old threads here. I am trying to figure out my plans for next year. With all of the airlines devaluing their miles I am thinking I need to plan something soon for autumn next year.

I haven't done too much research yet, but it sounds like there are some pretty gay places in Seminyak...including a number of "clothing optional" resorts which always scare me a bit. I stayed at a clothing optional place in Key West many years ago which was a little scary.

I'm not much of a beach person so I will be looking for historic and cultural type of activities during the day.

I know Pong made some interesting posts in the other threads that took a bit of deciphering. :-) But anyone been over to Bali or other parts of the country lately?

I was in Bali last May, did not chase any gay life as had stopovers in BKK before and after that trip.

Located street with Bali Joe bar in Seminayak out of curiosity but it was too early to dive in so did not stop there. There's another gay bar just next door to it,  forgot name / Maxi? / . Went to explore stretch of Kuta beach where freelancers apparently are hanging in but did not see any, possibly because I was too early.

If you are not beach person  and looking for history and culture skip Kuta region completely and go to Ubud, less crowded, cooler at night, selection of tours as good as in Kuta and with lesser distance as Ubud is pretty much at the center of Bali, nice walks in vincinity, plenty of restaurants, good shopping and generally laid back place.

My personal favourite was climbing Batur volcano at night, do not forget to try luwak coffee as well.

Made 2 days detour to Yogyakarta in Java to explore temples of Prambanan and great stupa of Borobudur nearby, sights not to be missed , both from UNESCO list. Feel free to ask questions if you need more information

I was in Bali last year and while I loved the island and the food and the people, I doubt that I'll be returning any time soon. My first bad experience started at the airport where I misunderstood the form thay wanted me to fill in - I got a scolding from the officer collecting the forms.

And then I discovered that my hotel was a non-smoking one and after being forced to sign a guarantee letter that I would pay something like 2,000,000 Rupiahs if they caught me smoking in my room, I had to go out and smoke like a beggar at the roadside every time i wanted to smoke. I'm sure the mosquitoes there still remember me with much happiness.

Is it a policy that the hotels do NOT put smoking/non-smoking information on their websites? I tried searching on the internet and looked at nineteen of them but found no information regarding that policy. I wrote to a number and it turned out that they were all non-smoking rooms without exception.

Was it that hard to put this little bit of information on their websites or is it because they hope that by the time people like me find out the situation, we'll have no choice but to stay and pay. Well, they won't be getting any more of my money I can tell you.

#3,

Sorry to disappoint you and sorry that you did not have a good experience there.

By the way,

Smoking is so yesterday..out of fashion.

What's in - no smoking.

Bali is still a wonderful place to visit - the rich culture of Ubud is worth more than a visit..the art gallery, the street procession are just some of the attractions.

The day I worry about anything that is in fashion is the day I will start thinking of pushing up daisies. Nobody tells me how to dress, what to do and least of all how or what to think. Sorry but I'm not some shallow mindless "fashionista" whose only worry in life in what the rest of the fashion-conscious herd will think about me if I am not wearing the latest jeans or t-shirt or clogs or high heels. I am not afraid to walk my where I want in my own way because I think independently. I'll even wear pink and purple polka-dotted blouses with duckshit green pants and sparkly sandals (with bright blue socks) if I feel like it.

I pardon your narrow-mindedness.

Bitchy claws are out!

You don't seem to understand what's current...

I am not talking about grooming and deportment, I am pointing towards the social (ill-) behaviour of smoking.

The air around us is polluted enough, exhaling cigarette smoke isnt one of the things we should add to the damage.

Really? me? Narrow-minded? You didn't understand that I was talking about not doing what's "current" because somebody else decided that? You were not talking about grooming and deportment? I guess you must speak a different brand of English from me then, because I speak THE Queen's English. Not SOME QUEEN'S ENGLISH..

Seems like the hotel is doing everything right on the smoking policy, with the exception of clearly warning the customer in advance. I only ever want to stay in non-smoking hotel rooms that do not stink of stale smoke.

Anyway, I hope we can get back on the Indonesia topic, as it looks like an interesting place to visit.

Message from the Queen's Mother...

Sorry other forum users, things are getting off-topic.

The issue of smoking should be relegated and ignore completely.

Sorry to that forum writer that my English isn't up to HIS royal standard.... especially someone who sprouts unfavourable remarks at me....

Anyway, let us concentrate our efforts discussing the joy and plight in Indonesia's vacation and ignore any undue/un-necessary flammings. ..

Some forummers simply have yet to learn the simple act of graciousness...tsk tsk...

Who cares whether he/she uses a foreign word to express an expletive..

What has that contribute to this topic?

Such a pea-mind...just another old smoke pot, sprouting indecipherable words...

Who cares?

Anyway back to the topic of what's new..

The authorities had almost found the blackbox...and so far, only 48 bodies have been recovered/identified.

What a shame that not enough Malaysians are mourning the loss of lives despite the recent fiasco of another air crash and the floods there... Perhaps he should put his wisdom into helping the less fortunate...

The plane crash should be a separate topic on a separate thread.

The opening post was clearly requesting information regarding a holiday in Indonesia.  I've not yet been to Bali, however a good friend has gone there for the three years in succession and has no trouble finding company via the usual websites and the hotel is very accommodating too.

Yes the Seminyak area, 2 precinct down from Kuta, is the converging point of gay socialising.

Prices in Bali are comparable to those in Bangkok - the food and drinks aint that much more.

My favourite place is the Ganesh Beach.  It is about 2 km away from the gay restaurants area but it is rather "unoccupied" and definitely much less crowded that the beaches at Kuta.  Massage parlours are a plenty there too.

Z909, you should try to visit this place ... to experience the rich culture and heritage is worth the time...

Stop swearing in long dead language, LOL

Revelatur turpia natura sua verba reginae... means "the nature of the queen is revealed by her vile words" though you might get a slightly different interpretation if you Googled it.

I'm not swearing. I was merely pointing out, in a more educated way, that the evidence speaks for itself.

I can understand why some people might feel quite at home in Bali but hard as it might be to believe, there are actually educated Asian gay men like me who do not "follow current trends to express their individuality" (an oxymoron if I ever heard one), screech like ravens on the internet forum boards...or think a plane crash is a good way of scoring whatever point might be in their clueless little brains.

PS

The picture shows an "entertainer" from Bali, so I guess this does qualify as a post about Bali (I hope).
