February 6, 201610 yr Making the papers here in the UK yesterday that a raid was made by the BIB (army) on a load of "British prehistoric colonials" and others playing Bridge in a room above a bar in Pattaya/Jomteim. They were tipped off by some well wisher that it was a gambling den ! Apparently the expat "old fossils" told the BIB to bugger off until the game had finished. Surprisingly the army chief respectfully complied and waited until the end of the game before arresting the lot of them. I wonder if this tactic would work in a boy bar if you find yourself on the receiving end of a BIB raid. Makes you proud to be British !!
February 6, 201610 yr Old news. As previously reported on Gay Button and the Bangkok Post 3 days ago. PS It was the German woman who stood her ground and spent a night in the lock-up.
February 6, 201610 yr Believe it or not many posters only read 1 Forum so even though it is old news to you and me ,there may be many here who have not heard the story.
February 6, 201610 yr Its only just hit the front page in the UK so it was new news to me. Would imagine the UK press wanting to put a "british bulldog" slant on the piece. Maybe I could ask the "Altes Madchen" (Old Girl) to stand in the doorway of the Go Go bar next time I am in residence. I guess any BIB would have second thoughts of crossing her again after the previous tongue lashing.
February 7, 201610 yr Even tho you find the raid event to be humerous I can assure you that the expats who were present did not find it humerous or amusing in any way. Having said that I personally find you referring to people in the older age bracket as "prehistoric fossils" to be insulting and insensitive. Without doubt there would be some members of this site in the older age bracket ( same as I am ) who would feel likewise. Don't forget that some day you will live to a ripe old age also., and then you can join the ranks of the "elderly seniors" good luck to you
February 7, 201610 yr Would imagine the UK press wanting to put a "british bulldog" slant on the piece.More likely they didn't check any facts and got it wrong as is normal with the British Press.
February 8, 201610 yr Apparently the real tongue lashing was from a very high ranking Thai lady who is president of the Asian bridge association. First hand account http://bridgewinners.com/article/view/confessions-of-a-bridge-criminal/

It was the Daily Mail story that was humorous (as I read it anyway) as it portrayed the best example of the expats of the former British Empire (and others) standing up to ignorant local officials and telling them where to "get off". It also went on to say that they all got themselves arrested, an act of defiance at its very best. Imagine the paperwork. My dear next door neighbour (old) who also read the story told me that the officials were probably put off by the mixed aroma of incontinence pants and mothballs, allegedly a feature of some Bridge Clubs in the UK. I was appalled at such a comment and pointed out that Bridge playing folk in Pattaya are mostly a picture of happiness and health, albeit teetering on the end of life's drag curve. I will only consider myself old when I am unable to bed a 20 year old or I have run out of money, whichever comes first. I will try and be more PC when I describe my fellow citizens in future on this and other forums. Sorry.
