The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami alert for Japan following an 8.4 magnitude earthquake that struck east of the Kurile islands approx. 1 hour ago. Costal areas in Hokkaido are currently being evcuated. The earthquake was measured as far away as New Zealand by its network of seismic monitoring drums.
