July 18, 200620 yr You may have perhaps been reading the recent newspaper horror stories, alleging how vast tracts of public land in Koh Samui have been encroached, stolen and developed by high Thai government officials, some allegedly very well placed in TRT, which PM Thaksin denied yesterday, but against which no formal investigation or police action has been taken. It was gratifying to finally read in a news bulletin today on the Bangkok Post's internet service, the following announcement: "About 100 officers with the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), crime-suppression police and anti-money-laundering force participated in the raid on a hilltop house-cum-office on Samui Island, a popular tourist resort situated 450 kilometres south of Bangkok in the Gulf of Thailand. " It turns out, however, that the 100 agents were there to arresting three farangs, 2 Brits and a Dane, members of a motorcycle club called The Bandidos, which Thai police say were engaging in "Mafia-type" activites, including "illegal land sales." No word yet on whether the trio had work permits. Case closed.
