Minister loses right to censor websites

"(BangkokPost.com) - The cabinet agreed on Tuesday to revoke the military junta's order for the Information and Communications Technology Ministry to block websites deemed harmful to the military council and to the national security.

It was not clear if any websites would be unblocked as a result of the action.

ICT Minister Sitthichai Pookaiyaudom proposed the issue at the weekly cabinet meeting and none of the ministers objected. Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont reportedly nodded, expressing his agreement on the matter.

From now on, only the court can decide whether to block a website to encourage more democracy in the country.

However there are more than 40,000 websites blocked, most of them pornographic but covering a wide range of politics and discussion boards as well.

The Freedom Against Censorship Thailand, the Bangkok-based anti-censorship group, released a report last month, showing that the ICT Ministry had blocked more than 11,300 websites in Thailand last month.

The Council for Democratic Reform - the original name of the military junta - imposed Announcement No. 5, giving the power to the ICT Ministry to block websites immediately after the September 19 coup."
