When I am here in Thailand I always plan at least on romantic evening with my thai bf. A nice restaurant, romantic setting, good food, fine wine (well, not really fine wine) and then back to my accomodations for whatever.

But it never seems to turn out very romantic! Seems the Thais do not understand the concept.

The bf may like the ambiance of the restaurant such as Cabbages and Condoms but thinks the food is medicore and doesn't drink the wine and instead has a Coke with the meal. No matter what I try the evening never turns out as I anticipated.

Do others experience the same-same?

Last Valentine's Day, my boyfriend and I had a great romantic dinner at Manhatten's. We had a drink with some little appetizers, a great meal with champagne, and a desert that was great. There was a rose at the table for my bf, and it was a great evening. Plan on returning next February.

No matter what I try the evening never turns out as I anticipated.

Had a similar experience with a young man I took to Issan for a couple of days. He wanted to show me the romantic side of the province. Walking barefoot through through what I hoped was mud in his family's rice paddy, I suppose, had some romantic sense to it. I. however, was preoccupied with the hope that there was a hose at the end of this escapade along with a snakebite kit. Then, of course, there were the local sanitary facilities, which I need not clarify for farang who have actually gone into the provinces. The romantic dinners (single fluorescent tube vs. candle light), topped with such regional delicacies as deep fried centipedes and roaches(?), were not the blue plate specials I was eager to sample. Finally, I am not sure what the drink was that he was offering, but, there being no Shiraz or Merlot available, I was thrilled that someone had the foresight to lay in a good supply of Coke.

I know he was disappointed that I was not eager to partake in the simple pleasures that he and his family enjoyed on special occasions; and I am certain that he had gone to great lengths to arrange that these treats be availed to me. It just did not turn out as he anticipated.
