February 22, 201214 yr Thank you for the videos today. It was great to see. I do love Rio during Carnival. I envy you for living there year round. Out of curiosity, when you are there all the time, does the saunas get boring? Does the party atmosphere get to you or do you just ignore it?
February 22, 201214 yr Yes those were great videos. I love the atmosphere but I have to say that now I'm glad I'm watching them on video instead of being there. I have lost interest in being in huge crowds of partying people. There was a time but it has past.
February 23, 201214 yr Author Active Members I personally try to stay away from the crowds. Me, after once or twice, I stay away myself. The Bola Preta and Boitata videos were only to show what goes on down here, besides the well-known desfiles in the Sambodromo on Sunday and Monday nights and the following early hours until around sunrise. But with over 500 official blocos and bandas as well as many informal concentrations of revelers, there really is something for everyone. Like our local costume contest on Saturday afternoon for the best costume made of toilet paper. Or our kids bloco at the local yacht club on Tuesday. I was in attendance on both Monday and Tuesday afternoons for the live music in front of the Camara on the Praca Floriano/Cinelandia. Very low key. Nice MPB and Samba. Very few people. If I remember correctly from previous years, they always have something going on this stage. That is the magic of Carnaval here. Find your favorite parts, take them as your own and leave the rest. The Eveganelicals of the Zona Sul and a nice little bloco with some a great drum corps. Think Mormons getting down. Nice sounds, straight-laced visuals. Not so great attendance. But no crowds at least. A friend here loves the Sambodromo parades. He went to the Mirins on Friday. Sunday and Monday, too. Me, I love the Quengas drag queens in Bairro de Fatima and Lapa on Ave. Mem de Sa and Rua Riachuello. Wouldn't miss it for the world. So there you go. One man's take on some of the festivities.
