On Wednesday Morning at Pattaya City Hall, Khun Itipon, the Mayor of Pattaya led a press conference to officially announce this year’s Pattaya Ginjai Festival which is a Chinese-inspired Vegetarian Event which lasts for 10 days where followers abstain from eating meat during this time. This year’s festival will begin on 28th September and will include a parade starting at 9.19am from the Bali Hai Port to the Sawang Boriboon Foundation headquarters in Banglamung where local chefs will prepare a large pan of noodles with vegetables for those taking part in the Parade. The Parade will take in all of Pattaya and will split after it leaves Walking Street. On the final day of the Festival, activities will take place at Lan Pow in Naklua. September 19, 200818 yr Should 'ginjai' be pronounced 'keen-chai' as in 'eat vegetables'? I'm not sure but I think 'keen' is Thai (as in 'keen-khau' or eat rice) and 'jai' is the Chinese word for 'vegetables'. The actual Chinese vegetarian festival begins on the 29th of September, which corresponds to the 1st Day of the 9th Moon and the birthdays of the Gow Hong-ya. It lasts 9 days and is celebrated on a very grand scale on Phuket Island, among other places in Southeast Asia. What is the Thai word for vegetables, anyway? I can't find my Thai dictionary and I can't remember it at all for some reason...maybe age is finally catching up with me.
September 19, 200818 yr Author What is the Thai word for vegetables, anyway? Roughly it's pronounced "pahk," but make sure you say it with a low tone. If you change the tone you also entirely change the meaning of the word.
September 19, 200818 yr Thanks, GB. I wonder if they're also going to have the fire walking and other stuff llike they showcase in Phuket. I know for a fact that Thai vegetarian food (whether it's the Chinese Thai one or not) is really good.
