Things to tell a new visitor to LOS

Featured Replies

Do not get into a shouting match with a Thai, especially when drunk. Thais are generally gentle but will inflict huge damage to your person when provoked.

People who work in the bars are people, not disposable tissue. It's a tough life they lead so treat them with courtesy and a smile.

Enjoy. Enjoy

There's a lot more to Thailand than go-go bars and beach massages.

Visit the Grand Palace, Reclining Buddha, Wat Awun; take a trip on the Chao Phraya river taxi; once in your life have lunch at The Oriental Hotel.

Remember you are guest in Thailand, act accordingly.

Honestly, I would say to a gay visitor to check out the bar scene, have a drink, sit with a boy, spend some money, off a boy and spend some more money. If a first, and only time, visitor you will have little to lose and much to remember.

Thailand is a magical place where if you treat the boys with respect, they will do the same to you but don't forget where you met them, where they come from and what they need.

Many falangs have come before you and many will come after you and you need to realize when you interact with the boys here that they base their impression of you on the many falangs who have lied to them, made them promises and broke their hearts, and while this may not be you, it is going to be their impression and they will try to get as much as they can as fast as they can because the smart ones know the inevitable result.

Find out how much a local would pay for it first!

Two sentences or less. Ok, here are mine:

1. Have a great time, but don't let yourself lose your heart to a Thai boy when you're here on a holiday.

2. "If you want love in Thailand, rent it." (That's a piece of advice given to me five years ago by Richard Burk, owner of the Amor restaurant, when I first moved here. Five years ago I thought he was a little too jaded. Now, five years later, I fully understand why he said that and I agree with him. From among all the farang I know, and that's a lot of people, I know only two who have an enviable permanent relationship going with a Thai boy. They're very lucky. Most farang I know who have been involved in relationships with Thai boys young enough to be their grandsons ended up miserable, heartbroken, and often broke. Unless you've known the boy very, very, very well for at least a full year, don't do it. My favorite line from farang is "This boy is different." Famous last words.)

Do a little research on thai customs and religions before arriving in LOS. Do not flash large amounts of money or wear costly jewelry and avoid getting yourself in confrontations as its all about face in thai society.
