Continental restaurant has raised it's prices by 20% effective today. Although it still is a good place to eat it means many breakfasts are now almost $1 more. This is a pretty large increase.

 

The one I go to on Soi Bokow is always full in the morning (late morning). So I am not sure how much the tourist slow down is affecting it.

 

In checking prices at the market, this is much more than recent price increases. But I think other places will follow

The breakfast I liked for 89 baht at Gossip Cafe was raised from 89 baht to 109 baht back in November. 89 baht, 100 with tip, was pushing it; at 109 plus tip I just don't go and have a Thai dish for 30 baht instead. My brekkies are at 4PM being a late riser.

When was the last time they raised their prices? If this is the only rise in the past year then 20% is very reasonable.

 

Last year the wholesale price of Rice nearly doubled - it has now come down to show only a 50% increase on this time last year but that is still a substantial increase.

 

Across a huge range of wholesale food produce (especially grain) costs have risen and you must be fair to the retailers and restaurants in your criticism.

During my 3 weeks in Haus Mewie in November we have been except one time ( breakfast at papa david) every day in continental bakery. I liked to choose from around 13 different breakfasts. Mostly liked the one with steak for 150 baht. I like early breakfast and they opened already 6am. Also pattayamail has interesting article http://www.pattayamail.com/661/dining.shtml

So my breakfast now would be 180 baht? I still would pay.

Just for the record, this morning a friend and I were going to meet at Continental Bakery, Jomtien, at 10:00am. It was so packed we literally couldn't get in. Every table was full. We went to Linda's instead. Linda's also serves a fine breakfast.

Actually, I prefer Linda's. I find the staff at Continental (especially the bigger one) not very friendly.

 

I fail to understand why prices are rising in the first place. The Baht is very stable, oil has crashed through the floor, imports from most countries (Japan excepted) should be cheaper and, from what I read, wages are not rising.

While it may be completely reasonable for retailers to raise prices, I just vote with my feet if there are better alternatives.
