I just saw this in "The Nation":

 

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Wednesday reminded the public to check the rumour about ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra before forming any conclusion.

 

Abhisit was reacting to rumour that countries, like Nicaragua and United Arab Emirates, might grant the status of special citizenship for Thaksin.

 

Past speculations relating to Thaksin proved false, he said, referring to Thaksin's claims that a number of countries would grant him special passport or would seek his advise or would provide safe haven.

 

I don't understand why Thaskin would think he is so famous or so important to the "world". Can anyone explain this to me?

Yes - money! He still had plenty of it to purchase both citizenship and diplomatic passports in any number of countries - not all of them dodgy. He also needs a place to park some of his remaining wealth where it cannot be frozen by official Thai government requests to overseas authorities.

 

What must make him most sick is the fortune impounded here in Thailand. As long as he cannot get access to that, it will be a gnawing sore in his guts. Part of me thinks his political shenanigans might disappear if he got those ill-gotten gains back. Just a hunch! B)

While I think Toxin wants to get his hands on that money and will do anything to get it, I don't believe he will disappear if he gets it. I think he will do more of his crooked stuff to get more and more.

I agree. There are many countries that could be a safe haven for him and would welcome his money.

I'm not so sure he would disappear. He still sees himself as the legitimate PM of Thailand who was wrongly overthrown. I would imagine anyone with an ego as enormous as his will not go away until he can set what he sees as the giant wrong done to him right. And there is pride and "face" as well. He feels like he has been greatly insulted and will want his revenge until he dies would be my guess.

Concerning his mental problems, at the top of the list is Meglomania.

Before you reach any conclusions from the quoted post, consider the source. Quoting Abhisit talking about Thaksin in the Nation is like quoting Goebbels talking about Jews in Der Angriff. It's called propaganda, for which cause the Nation has surrendered what little pretense it had left to be practicing journalism, in favor of being the mouthpiece for the current government and its sponsors. It transcends all the news the Nation prints, not just the editorial page, and some of its editorial writers make Goebbels look reticent with their anti-Thaksin rhetoric.

 

For sure, money is as important to Thaksin as it is to most rich Thai-Chinese, but my guess is that the thing he needs most to save that precious Asian concept of face is to be both rich and No. 1 again. I suspect that the only thing that will stop that quest is death or the fear of imminent injury to his loved ones.

 

If the reactionaries in power now are foolish enough to try and jail him, they'll make him a martyr and probably spark a revolution. Since this is Thailand, that's probably the option they'll choose.

Perhaps Thailand would be better to arrange for him to disappear.

and yet you do not hesitate to chastise other ex-pats who do have feelings on this subject. I am curious, can you provide us with a list of what is your business and what is not so we can comment without being scolded?

Many posters are living here, some for long periods, and yes we do develop opinions on Thai politics from our experience.

 

This is a discussion board, not a policy board, and I do believe we are entitled to express our opinions without fear of castration.
