In Pattaya I was never charged a fee using my Kasikorn Visa card to take money from a Kasikorn ATM.

 

Here in Chiang Mai, I went oput of my way to find a Kasikorn ATM and was charged 10 baht.

 

Now 10 baht's not a big deal, but I prefer to make many transactions of 500 or 900 baht so I don't get 1000 baht notes.

 

Anyone know what's up with the charge. Is it only free at my branch or in my region?

 

I could also use an Ayudatha card too.

I opened my SCB account in Chiangmai and I can use it anywhere in Chiangmai province without charge; outside of that province, there's a fee (last I knew it was something like 50 baht) to use it.

I suspect your setup is the same with Kasikorn.

 

What has pissed me off is SCB is now charging 20 baht to update your passbook. When I first did that at a branch that didn't have a machine (I had to go up to the tellers to get it done), I just figured that they charged the 20 baht because I had their people do it; however, I used an outside machine a day or two later and was still charged 20 baht. A ripoff in my view.

There's always something bizarre going on with the banks. If you're being charged to update your passbook with a machine, try going to one of the tellers and have the teller update it. I believe there's no fee that way.

 

For awhile Bangkok Bank was charging me 30 baht whenever I would make a deposit, and that was by cash machine or depositing via a teller. That lasted about a month. Then all of a sudden the charge for a deposit went away and now there is no charge again.

 

It all goes on my "I Don't Get It" list. I don't see why there should be a charge if you use an ATM in a province different from the one where you opened your account. It all goes through a main central computer, so what's the justification?

Under Thai law all banks are regional. This structure is very outdated and no longer appropriate.

No, it's not per province, just a few regions in total, but there's no map on Kbank's website.

 

For sure though, Bangkok, Issan, Chonburi, Chiang Mai, and Phuket are each in their own regions.

There is no justification. It goes to whatever the banks can get away with. With many banks in trouble, added fees help the bank's bottom line, even if it is so slightly.

I don't think it is unreasonable for them to charge a fee for other than SCB ATM cards, but SCB is the only bank in Thailand that I know of that does, so why should I use them?

I am with SCB, and I don't get charged when I withdraw from their ATM machines using their card. I am very happy with the service I have received so far. I've been with them for 3 years now. My TOT phone and Internet charges and Electric bill are taken out automatically - never had a problem so far.

I also have been with SCB (4 years) and like their service. It is just the US ATM card that they charge me to use. No other bank here does.

 

SCB doesn't charge me to use the atm card in the province (Chiangmai) where I opened the account. It charges me for use of the card only in other provinces.

 

As for the charge for the passbook update, that just started upon my return to Thailand in January (it never happened before). And they charge me for that update regardless if I use the teller or one of the machines (inside or out). That's the charge (it's 20 baht) that somewhat irritates me.

 

I suspect that many of the banks have initiated new fees in the last 60-90 days to help deal with the expected financial problems here in Thailand due to lower growth, possible recession, etc.
