Wow. Watching the event for the unveiling has been amazing. I am excited. The new IPad is a cross between an Iphone and a Notebook.

 

Being an Apple geek, this is exciting. I wonder how long after it goes on sale before the cloners in Thailand will be able to reproduce it?

I am not a stock guy but I know Apple stock has held value for me for many years. They will continue. They produce the best gadgets and I think this one will compete with the Kindle and that in itself will be a big seller. But, at this low a price, I know many of us who love Macs will get one even though we don't need one.

 

I wonder if it works on WiFi and 3G if you have the Skype or another app on the unit, it will work with calls too. Should be interesting to see. Their website is not taking orders yet but they are slated for delivery in 90 days.

 

Most likely I'll be in Brazil for their delivery so perhaps someone could pick one up for me and bring to a sauna in Rio?

I thought the name of the product was a bit goofy. When they sell a bigger one, will it be a MaxI Pad?

Like GT, I'm an Apple junkie. I love their products. But having read the "things-that-suck" page, I have doubts about this product. Having a 4:3 ratio is surely a huge mistake for movies. And for those who might opt for it for reading rather than purchasing a Kindle, it's not only larger but also 2 1/2 times heavier. I'll definitely be waiting for the next version.

I've been wanting one for a long time, but when I went to Amazon's web site and tried to read about it, I got a message telling me it would not be supported in Thailand. I can't figure out why it wouldn't, but that's what it said. Have they just not updated their info section? Can books be downloaded from here? Will it receive newspaper subscriptions here. If you (or anyone else) has one, I'd sure appreciate any info you have about it.

Rich, there is a thread about the Kindle on the Ting Tong forum. Khun jaafar bought one recently and, yes, it's supported in Thailand (for English) and he downloads books, newspapers, etc. I've seen it and, while I don't get impressed that often, it'll be something on my list to go look at this spring/summer when I return home. Although it's fairly expensive ($500.00 range?), it's probably quite worthwhile for those in Thailand who read a lot and wish to avoid all the book shipping costs.

There is also a long thread on here about it. I use it and I love it. I use it in Thailand as well. You need an Amazon account and if you have one and are able to do OneClick you are set. There are also ways around that.

 

You buy the book and since the USA download doesn't work, you simply go to your account at Amazon and take the book and move to your desktop and then to your kindle. It is very easy to do and you can do with all their book.

 

I have both the smaller kindle and the larger one. I like the larger one as very easy to read. I think it is great and don't think the new IPad will kill Kindle sales.

But I am really pissed off with large paperbacks purchased in Thailand whose spines seem to collapse very quickly in the humidity, and with large hardbacks which take up space and weight when I am travelling. So I am seriously thinking about a Kindle. I just looked back at the earlier Kindle thread and GT's confirmation that it is clear enough to read from when lounging in the sun by a pool. That seals the deal for me!

The Kindle DX has a 9 inch + and the Kindle2 has a 6 inch screen. The smaller Kindle2 has 6 font sizes so if you forget your spectacles that should not be a problem. The other difference between the 2 is that the DX can hold 3,500 books while the Kindle 2 can only store 1,500 books. Also, the more expensive Kindle does auto rotating whereas that is a manual function on the Kindle 2 - a feature convenient when you want to see something like a map in landscape as opposed to portrait mode. The price difference is great -$245 for the Kindle2 and $489 for the DX - I could not afford both - I found the Kindle2 more portable and it works better for my needs. - For me this is the greatest invention since sliced bread - I love my Kindle

Books are very under rated.

 

I can put a bookmark in them, never have to worry about batteries, scribble on them, drop them & find on one would be interested in pinching the book off my chair.

 

As for the Apple thing, why does it get so much coverage? I fail to see the point of the device. Doesn't even seem to have a keyboard.

I guess there is something wrong with me. I find nothing remotely amusing in that boring vdo. Indeed I find it totally offensive. There was a huge outcry on this board and elsewhere about the Pattaya Wax Museum using billboards featuring Hitler with the result they were taken down. I hope - but do not expect - that this vdo soon disappears.

Actually it fell 7% after hitting a new High Price. Stocks frequently go back a little after reaching new highs. And of course the whole technical sector is down.

 

The drop has nothing to do with the IPad launch!!!!
