I used my AMEX at a very nice hotel to secure lodging while staying in BKK recently.

 

Two days later I got an email from AMEX asking about a charge of $2500 for some jewelry purchased in Chiang Mai. I hadn't been in Chaing Mai to make this purchase. AMEX cancelled the card and the charge was removed.

Not for about 4 years. Over a year I had to have 2 VISA cards cancelled after the card security departments discovered a series of purchase in England in the first instance, and then in Korea in the second. In both cases the charges were cancelled. Each happened after a trip to Phuket! Since then I have had zero problems - but then I have only been back to Phuket once since then.

I've never had a problem with credit cards in Thailand.

I use my CC often in Thailand. But, having been burned in Brazil on a few occasions, I never let it out of my site. If a waiter tries to take it away, I follow them and watch them swipe it. So, I am very careful about where I use it.

Unfortunate thing is that finance and techology seem to create a dangerous mix. Starting from credit, debit and ATM cards and ending up with internet banking and complicated financial products... I strongly prefer banks which provide digital security device for internet banking, try to avoid using credit or debit cards. When travel, prefer to use local banks (and opened banking accounts throught the world). My local ATM card is linked to one local account. The bulk of money is on unlinked account to avoid losses in case the ATM card is compromised..

The so-called PT (permanent travelers) go even further. Some even travel with a lot of cash and golden coins...There is no limit to people's madness.

Never had any problems in Thailand, but then I have only ever used my card to pay my hotel bills (the Suriwong Hotel in BKK)- and once, the Indian tailor in Phuket about 15 years ago.

The only place I can't really avoid having the card out of sight when paying is at restaurants where the waiter brings the bill and takes your card away to process it.
