Phuket air link to Isaan TTR Weekly Thai AirAsia has announced the launch of three weekly Phuket-Ubon Ratchathani services, starting 12 October. The airline has a service to the northeastern town from Bangkok, but this is the first link from Phuket to southern Isaan. It will offer the services on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. It hopes to tap expats working in Ubon and local residents who want to take a break in Phuket.
August 26, 201016 yr Living in Ubon, I hope it works out for Air Asia. I'm not too sure of the traffic load that it will create, but will be nice to see the price structure also. Hope they offer some really cheap tickets to kick off the new link...I would have to take a trip if they did!!

I thought of you when I first read the Air Asia news release... having airport transport to Phuket should be an advantage for NE residents... vs having to go to BKK first. tj
August 26, 201016 yr I always thought the obvious entry point to Laos is via Udon Thani and Nongkhai. Is there a good border crossing near Ubon? Yes, there is the Chong Mek/Vang Tao crossing which I passed through last year. From memory, it's about 65 km from Ubon and another 30 or so to Pakse. You can get a Lao visa on arrival there. It's a good entry point for Southern Laos, where I visited Wat Phu and the 4000 Islands, or you can travel North to Central Laos, where I visited the Khong Lor Cave (one of the world's natural wonders - a 7km cave that you can travel through by boat). I believe (but do not know, I had a car) that there are regular minibuses from Ubon to Chong Mek.
