Thai tourism regaining normalcy

 

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The overall situation in the tourism sector has improved as travelers start returning to Thailand while the Thai Hotels Association (THA) is positive normalcy will be regained by year end if free from political unrest.

 

THA President Prakij Chinamornpong said the room reservation rate nationwide had recovered greatly after it had been affected by the political turmoil during April-May. In the first 8 months of this year, Phuket has had 60-70% of its accommodations booked, which is the highest percentage in the country and relatively normal compared to the pre-riot period. The hotels in Bangkok are also picking up, now having 40-50% of their capacity reserved.

 

Mr Prakij said visitors from China, Korea and Japan had started returning to Thailand. The recent bomb attacks in the capital may shake their confidence but not as much as the past turmoil.

 

The tourism and services sector is recovering quickly because Thailand is still among the top travel destination alternatives. New ventures also help boost the industry, forcing businesses to undertake adaptations in order to keep up with the dynamic demands.

That's a major "if". There's already been a couple of grenade and bomb attacks since the protests ended.

Thailand's tourism industry does seem to bounce back rather quickly considering the scale of recent disasters. There's a lot of value in the brand it has built up over decades as a star tourist destination.
