The 40 student he canned should all have a turn at caning this asshole.

This teacher might not have been doing something so extreme. Caning in a Western school now a days might spark outrage (not to mention be illegal) but unfortunately, caning is common practice in many Asian country's schools.

 

It is also common practice amongst Asian parents.

 

I strongly disagree with the practice.

I was being facieious (sp). I wasn't supporting the caning...NO.

I think it's wrong for both parents and teachers to hit kids.

It is also illegal in Thailand.

Is it? That's one thing Thailand has over its neighbours then.

 

I think it's still legal and practiced in Malaysia and Singapore.

Maybe in this respect Thailand is more progressive than its neighbors.

In my view, even if it is ok but some cultural standards, it is wrong and unnecessary. There are many other ways to deal with these student problems that enforce a child's own self worth.

I totally agree. I experienced some pretty brutal (though I'm sure others had much worse) corporal punishment when I was a kid and the above statement was true for me.

Catholic school teacher filmed caning students in Thailand

SECRETLY recorded mobile phone footage has exposed a teacher at a Catholic boarding school in northeastern Thailand who whacked dozens of students on the buttocks with a cane wrapped with electrical wire.

Art teacher Somchai Limthanmaporn was fired after he was exposed hitting at least 40 students, according to Nongkran Prathumtri, an administrator at St Mary's School in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima. She said the school would not defend him.

 

The footage of last week's canings was aired yesterday on Thai television.

 

Parents of the students at St Mary's have already filed complaints with police over the beatings, meted out as punishment to students who failed to clean their living quarters.

 

In the clip secretly recorded by one of the students, Somchai delivered baseball-like swings at their buttocks, leaving at least one of his targets in tears. Pictures of scarred buttocks were widely shown in the Thai media yesterday.

 

"He must be responsible for his wrongdoing," Nongkran told TNN television news. "There will be no protection from the school."

 

Thailand's Education Ministry prohibits any inhuman or violent punishment and only allows the use of verbal warnings, probation and termination in the event that teachers have evidence to warrant punishing their students. However, the use of corporal punishment is not unusual.

 

Neither the school nor police handling the case could be directly contacted.

 

Because Somchai was not a full-time accredited teacher, he cannot face any professional sanctions from the Teachers' Council of Thailand, reported the newspaper Matichon. Legal action remains up to the police.

I support the use of caning in the right circumstances.

 

This was legal when I was in school and the few that received the cane generally deserved it. No there's no effective means of disciplining trouble makers & our society is the worse for it.

 

Of course, there should be some controls in place so teachers have to follow guidelines on when to use the cane & make a record of the circumstances.

I wouldn't want to say that all corporal punishment is bad under all circumstances but, generally, in my view, a parent or parent figure resorts to it out of ignorance and often because the adult did such a lousy job of effective discipline in the first place. Unfortunately, physically abusive behavior toward one's kids or towards one's partner is usually behavior the perpetrator learned from sweet old daddy or mommy (and who learned it from their folks).

 

As to the caning done by this particular teacher (as shown by the videos), no damn excuse for it whatsoever. If I was one of the parents of one of the kids who committed the heinous crime of leaving a classroom too messy, I'd probably would like whack the teacher a few times with the same cane so he clearly understood what I thought about it (and I'm fairly certain he'd get the point, very quickly in fact).
