Although it’s more than half a year away, it’s now time to think about booking for one of the country’s most amazing and extraordinary Festivals. Held in Ubon Ratchathani at the start of the Buddhist Lent, the scale of the Candle Festival is unique in Thailand. The whole city seems to be involved, not only the temples which each provide a large float with extraordinarily detailed wax carvings. When I was there 4 years ago, there were very few farang. All the students taking part were happy to chat and have their photos taken

 

I mention this now because hotels in the city get booked out up many months in advance of the Festival Parade. This year it will be held on July 15. It's well worth arriving 2 days early so that you can spend time going around the temples to watch the craftsmen putting the finishing touches on the floats.

I'd like to think I might get along to see this festival one day. Probably not this year though.

 

Great photos and yet again you can see it in people's eyes, the sheer fun and enjoyment. I've seen this in many festivals and parades in Thailand. People love to dress up and take part. Helping to maintain a long tradition must be an important factor too. I wonder how old this particular festival is?

 

Festivals and parades such as this are a perfect antidote to all those who might be Pattaya'd-out for one reason or another. Hop on a bus or rent a car and go and see for yourself.

sorry, it is not really ''unique'' in that it only plays in Ubon. It is held-on roughly same dates (Buddist calendar) in many Isan local towns, but in a (much) smaller scale/format. Those having friends from there may ask about it to them.

You are absolutely correct to say there are many Festivals on this date. But I did qualify my description by saying "the scale of the Candle Festival is unique in Thailand." And you seem to agree.
