August 1, 201115 yr 90% of the motorbike drivers in Thailand have no regard for their own safety, the safety of other people and they are a hazard to other motorist. I realize that generalizations are, at best, not good but in this case I think I am being generous with that percentage. Today, on my way back from the immigration office in Bangkok one tried to squeeze between my truck and another truck and hit my car. He then had the audacity to demand that I give him 5000 baht for what he said was damage to his bike. I literally yelled at him "Go fuck yourself". The Thai man in the other truck also screamed some things in Thai at him and I don't think the words were kind even though I could not understand them. I'm really beginning to hate the little bastards on their bikes weaving and speeding through traffic. Does anyone know if it is true that motorbike drivers are always in the right in an accident?
August 1, 201115 yr I think your anger at this particular incident is slightly increasing the percentage of lousy motorsy drivers. I actually think most of them are pretty damn good drivers given they're still alive after driving through Thai traffic all these years.
August 1, 201115 yr Bike drivers may be fearsome, but car drivers are not much better, in my book. Clearly there is no proper training for drivers. Take any expressway and lane discipline consists of weaving into whichever lane happens to be empty, no matter that they are overtaking on the wrong side at speed. Coming back from Patttaya a couple of weeks ago, I lost count of the cars which were speeding way over the limit and treating the road like a Formula 1 driver with a permanent twitch. In town, it's often the law of the jungle, although most drivers somehow seem able to avoid the accidents just waiting to happen. But bike drivers are a law unto themselves. I used to take motorcycle taxis. Then I lost my nerve as they constantly weaved into impossibly tight spaces, and now avoid them.

[cynical comment] No - the only think you can guarantee is that the falung is never in the right, if it is only Thai's involved then the higher status person is always in the right [/cynical comment] bkkguy
August 5, 201115 yr Thats so true, Im driving all the time in TH country and so many times a bike cuts out in front of you without looking. Luckily most people in Thailand know this and steer way clear of motor bike riders
