In case this gets lost in the Bangkok Flood thread, Nok Air has cancelled all flights from noon today until Monday 31 October. Flights in the air will be diverted to Suvarnabhumi.

 

And what happens, I wonder, if Suvarnabhumi's flood defences are breached? We'll be back to the situation of three years ago!

furhter news: this does thus NOT mean that NOK will fly out of Swampy.

They intend to park their planes at U-Tapao.

Orient Thai (formerly known as 1-2-GO or 1-2-Crash) has moved flights to Swampy-reduced schedule.

From the news: Don Muang airport was flooded-so that a bunch of latest arrivals on NOK were trapped inside the terminal building (since a few monthes they moved domestic to the old international big building0 AND the ''flood regulation or so Committee has its premises/temp. offices in this building (also used by the govt. when the reds besieged parliament last year).

It is to be exepcetd that many news/radio and papers, will confuse peope with ''BKK airport closed by flooding'' or so- again: this is the OLD DMUang airport, hitherto only used by a very few domestic flights and NOT the newm main big Suvannaphumi airport-which is dry and safe and all that.

I also read (en enormous thread on TA=tripadvisor) that SOME=not all airlines are nice to booked pax into BKK and let them postpone or divert their bookings (f.e. to KUL or SIN)-contact your airline if that might interest you.

Don Mueang has now been closed for all flights.

 

Nok has already notified those on its email list of the alternative date or refund situation, and all ticket holders have been/will be notified by sms.

 

I agree with pong that having BKK as the airport code for both airports is causing major confusion and may well lead passengers to cancel trips. The misleading heading now on the BBC's website is -

Bangkok's second airport has suspended all flights after floodwaters breached its northern perimeter.

 

Don Muang airport, used mainly for domestic flights, is in northern Bangkok - the area of the capital worst hit by the flooding.

Another piece of shoddy sensationalist & misleading journalism from the beeb.

Think of the inconvenience this will cause some of the less well informed travellers.

All because some journalist is more concerned about the impact of the headline than informing the readers.

 

The headline should read something like "Bankok Minor Second Airport Closed".

Last time I went there, they had about 3 operational planes in sight and a similar number of scrappers.

Nok has now announced that it will start operating from Suvarnabhumi from today -

 

Nok Air will start operations in and out Suvarnabhumi Airport from 27 October – 10 November 2011. Flights will be operated to 9 destinations which are Chiang Mai, Phitsanulok, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang, Phuket and Hat Yai with Boeing 737-400.

but at reduced schedule-only routes to Udorn and ChMai I believe- 2 or 3 of their normal 6/7 planes in use.

The Bangkok Post this morning indicated that 85% of the Don Muang district has 50 centimeters or more of standing flood water. It also mentioned that the Don Muang terminal has flood water in the building (terminal) although the article didn't mention how deep it was within the terminal. Amazing - and I sure as hell hope that Suvarnabhumi, the golden land built on a swamp, escapes the deluge.
