On arrival at the QS yesterday they have a new policy that you must pay a security deposit of 2000 baht .....but....it's now in CASH only 

I always used card 💳not anymore CASH is king they said 

I must say the rates are excellent lately with QS as low as 1000-1300 a night

I stayed at QS a few times in June/July and was only asked to pay 1000 baht each time. I always paid cash.

Like you, I managed to get very good rates, often including bargain deals for breakfast.
