I need a place with a good rate for money exchange in Bangkok or Pattaya. I prefer Bangkok near the Siam Paragon area. Any suggestions? Or, is it better to reach Pattaya?

I use the one by Sala Daeng BTS (they have a portable unit in the same building as the Subway & KFC).

Last time I looked, Vasa offered a slightly better rate, but that's not worth a detour to Sukhumvit unless you are there already.

There was a also jewellery shop just between Soi Duangthawee & the Kasikorn bank which offered a good rate last year, although I did not try them.

Above experience is based on cash transactions. I find it hard to walk past a bank without glancing at their exchange rate board.

z909, what do you mean by portable unit? Do you mean a sub-branch? It almost sounds as if you mean an automated exchange machine, like an ATM. I don't think such things exist yet, do they?

 

Thanks for the link. Does SuperRich accept TT? When I use that pop-up to get the rates, SuperRich disappears from the list! I have used SuperRich before, to xchange cash at Prom Phong BTS and there was no surcharge. Other places I have used before always had a surcharge. Not a bad deal, really.

Well, one slight one in the beginning when she tried to tell me I was giving her 700 USD less than what I knew I gave her. I corrected her and told her count again. I then asked the BF to count with us. This time she came back with the right number. LOL

BTW..In Pattaya I have gotten my best exchange rate

from the Money Exchange shop located on the West side of Second Rd

between South Pattaya Rd and Boyztown.

 

I believe they also have same shop opposite side (East side) of Second Rd...

between South Pattaya Rd and the Boat Bakery Cafe.

A kiosk. I just couldn't quite think of the right word yesterday.

They also have a new shop just around the corner from the Om Yim.

Could you please tell me more about Vasa in the Sukhumvit Area? I will be staying in that area and not familiar with it and will need money exchanged before coming to Pattaya.

 

In Pattaya I agree the Money Exchange place between Boat and S. Pattaya Rd. is the best. If you are near Jomtiem there is a place across the road from Shenanigans in a small booth next to a new luggage store that offers the best rate of all the ones near the beach, but not as good as 2'nd Rd one.

When I looked, Rates were marginally better than Superich, but the difference was not enough to justify any detours. Obviously this can change.

re Su-Ri in BKK:

MAIN ofice is in a sidesoi, to the left of fht giant BigC opporite WTC/Central World, look for the orange signs.THIS (in fact these 3) offices offer the best raies-slightly higher as the other smaller SR outlets, like in silom, but ONLY for REAL cash (TC not even looked at), and ONLy mo-fr office hours (roughly 10-17 or maybe 18 hrs). Then the rates are set a little lower-this may explain the difference in posted rates.. Also for both € and US$ higher rates are given for high bills-100 and more. AND they want to see your passpt and make a copy of it-and now also want the name of place you stay-for those of you privacy-challenged.

SR is mainly VERY competetive for other valuta that normal banks sniff at, like the Chinee yuan etc. Also for buying those-I started with € and chanegd in SR-into THB and then into CNY-and got a better rate (amount of CNY for 100eur) as I would get in China!

VASU is AFAIK simply another outlet of SR offering the same rates- a simple google will easily tell their Sukhvit location-I guess (from memory) its near to soi 11-that side and along the main rd-can easily be seen from bus or even BTS.

There is yet another office named SIAM-just a little beyond the white BCC=Cultural centre, north of MBK , opposite Siam Discovery for fast and direct cash money exch.

Pattaya-there used to be a similar exchange somewhere along walking street-left side, probably an Indian tailor-but thats so long ago its likely to have changed.
