Exactly. As Bangkok started so late, they really could - and should - have learned from all the mistakes that had been made elsewhere. Unfortunately for all of us concerned though, they hardly leave out any mistakes that can possibly be made. Missing links, missing sky walks, missing unified ticketing - you name it, they screw it up with a "great" level of consistency.

Whenever I'm in one of the poorer ASEAN capitals, I see these fat clowns driving around in their even fatter cars - I have little doubt that they're doing more damage than good, and the orphanage business in Cambodia really is a particularly disgusting example.

Thais tend to criticize me for over tipping, but that doesn't have any effect on my tipping habits. If I'm the one who pays, I decide how much I tip, otherwise I leave it to those who are paying. I don't give any money to beggars anywhere in the world. In Bangkok in particular, a lot of the misery we are presented with is more a result of organized crime (gangs) than a dysfunctional social system. I won't support that, not even with 25 satang a pop.

Thailand could introduce an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) for those short-term visitors who don't require a visa (or currently apply for a visa on arrival) and even get the questionnaire that is currently a part of the arrival card done online before these travelers depart, when the ETA enrollment takes place. That combined with APIS and automated gates, you could get rid of most stamp monkeys and retrain these clowns to do something useful for the country.

Great to hear you'll be back soon! I think the Songkran circuit parties are more fun and I'm a fan of Songkran in general. Others basically hate it and that obviously makes quite a difference. For NYE, on the other hand, for me Bangkok doesn't stand out as a place to be. In fact I often escape Bangkok over New Years and go elsewhere.

For what little any personal experience might be worth, from having worked with citizens of Malaysia for more than a decade, I do believe that you deserve a higher ranking than most other countries in the region. All my experiences have been great, exceeding my expectations. Singapore is even better, sure, but it also comes with a hefty price tag.

I think the problem isn't so much that Thailand is a developing country, I'm sure most visitors and expats realize that. The real problem is that some developments are the exact opposite of progress. Thainess before development. The TM.6 debacle is a good example. They realized it's crap, but instead of working hard to scrap that obsolete nonsense altogether, they had it redesigned. The new design might actually be worse than the existing one in terms of practicability - I guess we will see soon.

I've enjoyed most of my trips to the countryside to visit Thai friends. After a few days, it's usually quite enough for me, but a little adventure every once in a while is fun. A Bangkok mono diet would get boring at some point. I'd jump at the chance to visit someone in a Burmese village, so far that hasn't happened yet...

I would love to see those numbers, too, but I think there's little chance they will ever see the light of the day. What puzzles me most is that it was a Thai who bought the majority share in Stick's website (or so he wants us to believe, I have to take his word for it). If I were a Thai, the only reason for me to buy that site would be to bury it. Unless the returns are crazily high - very unlikely!

I'm not convinced yet. He could have simply said his goodbyes, if that had been his intention. Hinting at the possibility that a miracle might happen sounds a lot like he's "motivating" people to make it happen. Maybe his plan is to bring in another investor and to get rid of the current majority owner. That would make a lot of sense, considering that he and that majority owner don't get along well.
