This thread makes me think of the Colombian expression "No dar papaya". It means don't put yourself in a situation where you may be taken advantage of, don't show wealth or draw unnecessary attention, a papaya being a rich, delicious fruit that you should not simply give away since then you cannot enjoy it. https://www.spanishdict.com/answers/151217/what-does-no-dar-papaya-mean Often when someone recounts something bad that has happened, you will hear "Dio papaya" in response. To answer your question directly, I would say there is excellent advice here for a first-time visitor to the city. Agreed, the vaste majority of Laureles barrio south of the stadium is quite safe and I have never had any issues going about my business around that neighbourhood. Increasingly it is the barrio of choice for ex-pats and you will hear both English and German spoken regularly. I would endorse many of the comments about certain neighbourhoods being "unsafe" in the sense that you are more likely to encounter potential situations. El Centro after dark and on weekends can be rough, and the Parque de luces is bad outside of office hours, but I have negotiated both situations. A little common sense goes a long way. The one neighbouhood noted as a no-go zone is Trinidad (between the Olaya Herrera airport to the Medellin river) that is still controlled by narcos to move product though the city. Do not go there -- there is nothing to see there -- as the neighbourhood is still controlled by drug gangs who will know you are on the wrong turf. Skip Trinidad and walk up to Belen barrio better Cra 30 and Cra 33 which is the newest up and coming neighbourhood with tons of cafes, shops and restaurants along its lively streets.

Calle 56 is known as both Calle Zea and Calle Bolivar depending which neighbourhood you are in. So in this case, the correct name would be Calle Bolivia since it is a direct connection from this location to Parque Bolivar.

Agreed 100%. In the past I have made inquiries and the answer is either (A) absofreakinglutely no way or (B) sure for $200-$400 USD with a gift included. Most don't bother past that point (have not had someone that obsessed thus far). The boys risk their employment if caught as it is against the rules in the signed agreement with the employers (Chaterbate and Flirt4Free are sister corporations). For the long-term successful performers (like Dante Santos named above) it is not worth risking a lucrative career that he can do from home. I will check that as I am not currently following. 2. Google Translate is a perfect solution (and I am certain they are familiar). Many of the staff speak passable English but have a backup plan like Google translate just in case. The message (in Spanish) that is posted to the WhatsApp is a description of the location of the hotel. It can be confusing because he uses the names of the street and not the numbers (I believe that the hotel is between Calle Peru (55 Street)and Calle Zea (56 Street). I can translate the message for you later today, but there is nothing special in the message that I have not posted about here. Have fun!

I assume that you are doing the the direct flight to Bogota via Air Canada (apologies if incorrect) which take about 6 hours. It is nice to arrive directly at your destination, but landing in the middle of the night stinks. By the time you clear customs and have your luggage (BOG has one of the strictest baggage screening in the world) it is about 5am local time. I prefer to grab a room at a nearby airport hotel and get a few hours sleep before venturing into the city. El Dorado airport is in the west extreme of the city. Check with your hotel when they will allow you to do the check-in, as they are not as flexible as we are used to in Canada or U.S.A. Plan your travel times accordingly. Fun fact--the word in Colombian spanish for Check-in is "check-in". If you are transferring between flghts through either Panama or Mexico City (both are major hubs) then you may want to purchase a lounge pass where you can go relax between flights. Both airports are large and offer plenty of things to do while waiting for the next leg of the journey. I have flown through Panama City many times to arrive directly in Medellin and the layover was long, but the time went rather quickly. Take some entertainment to pass the time (book, music, podcasts, magazines). Merry Christmas!

You are correct. I landed this afternoon and CoronApp is no longer as of October 2021 -- it has been migrated to a full Corona virus services platform call MinSaludDigital for Colombians only. The Check-Mig app is the only requirement for foreign travellers now, both for arrival and internal flights. You did comment once that you would probably enjoy Calle de los pecados (Cle 57a) which I would recommend checking out in daylight before you commit to returning in the evening. That area of La Candelaria around Parque Bolivar is a known area for open drug trafficking and use. Muggings and pickpockets are common around the Catedral Metropolitana and your abuelita would tell you to never set foot in that neighbourhood. Ironically it is a tourist draw because of a scene from Narcos Season 1 featuring Pablo on Netflix, which might be entertaining except the foreigners often do not know how seedy the area is in reality. Keep your wits about you when getting oriented to the scene. The Calle de los Pecados is just off the Parque Bolivar, one block east from the Olimpica supermarket. For a real authentic Medellin experience, I would cross Avenida Oriental (Carrera 46) and head over to Parque del periodista where you can purchase beer and sit and socialize with the local crowd. All types gather here and people watching is part of the fun. This is an open use drug zone, where police look the other way. A good place to make connections and sample local product, as well as find herb, which can be a challenge in Medellín. Have had many interesting evenings start from this historical location. If you carry some street smarts and respect for "la cultura" you will be fine. And when you are done, La Cantina de Javi is just a 5 minute walk to the north. where the locals will greet you with Paisa charm. ¡Bienvenido!

I will be in Medellin briefly next week for Noche las velas (Dec 7) which is the unofficial kick-off to the holiday season and my favourite Colombian holiday. Flights are really cheap right now (check Avianca and CopaAir) and I was able to snag a deal from Bogota to the DR for another commitment.
