Brazilian presidential hopeful Eduardo Leite comes out as gay
But governor who hopes to challenge Jair Bolsonaro next year backed the far-right leader in 2018

    One of Brazil’s leading politicians, the presidential hopeful Eduardo Leite, has announced he is gay – a rare move celebrated by many as a triumph over prejudice in a country whose president has declared himself a proud homophobe.
Leite, the 36-year-old governor of the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, made the announcement on Thursday night during an interview with the country’s top broadcaster, TV Globo.
 
“I’m gay – and I’m a governor who is gay rather than a gay governor. Just as Obama in the United States wasn’t a black president, but a president who was black. And I’m proud of this,” said Leite, from the centre-right Brazilian Social Democratic party (PSDB).
The politician, who hopes to challenge the far-right leader, Jair Bolsonaro, in next year’s presidential election, said he had nothing to hide, but wished sexual orientation was “a non-issue” in Brazil.
Leite’s revelation sparked an outpouring of support from activists and fellow politicians. “I know the pain the prison of the closet represents, particularly in a conservative environment like politics,” tweeted Fabiano Contarato, who became Brazil’s first openly gay senator in 2018.
“You’ve made history,” the veteran LGBT campaigner Toni Reis wrote on Facebook.
Leite thanked people for their support, tweeting: “The countless messages of affection and support that I’m receiving leave me absolutely convinced: love will defeat hatred!”
Not everyone celebrated Leite’s revelation, with many activists remembering how Leite had supported Bolsonaro in the 2018 election despite the populist’s notorious history of homophobia.
In a 2013 interview with Stephen Fry – which the British actor later called “one of the most chilling confrontations I’ve ever had with a human being” – Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Brazilian society doesn’t like homosexuals.”
Jean Wyllys, who was the first openly gay member of Brazil’s congress to fight for LGBT rights, said Leite had never repented for backing Bolsonaro, who had spent decades “perpetrating the most vile and sordid kind of homophobia”.
Wyllys said: “This chap had many opportunities to defend the LGBT community and he didn’t. On the contrary … he was a Bolsonarista until yesterday – and he’s probably still one today, because at no point has he retracted his support for Bolsonaro.
“So I don’t celebrate this. I’m not part of this team of people who are commemorating this chap coming out of the closet as if it was some great accomplishment for Brazil’s LGBT community.” Wyllys went on to call Leite’s announcement a strategic move designed to boost his presidential hopes.
Renan Quinalha, a lawyer and LGBT activist, said he welcomed Leite’s announcement on a personal level. “It’s really cool that a guy can discover himself and accept who he is – and find the strength and courage to do so – because it isn’t an easy process. As a gay man, I know what it was like for me … so it’s important to applaud this. I also think it is objectively really positive that Brazil’s new generations see a governor … coming out as gay. Visibility helps.”
But Quinalha was troubled by Leite’s decision to describe himself as “a governor who is gay” and not a “gay governor”. “It’s not just a play on words … he’s clearly sketching a dividing line between certain gay existences that are legitimate, and others that are not,” Quinalha said, questioning why Leite had not simply said: “I’m gay. Full stop.”
Leite declared he would vote for Bolsonaro on the eve of the 2018 election despite claiming he was not “100% comfortable” with his ideas. He called the decision “a democratic gesture”, but insisted he represented “the politics of love, not hate”.
Last month, Leite found himself on the receiving end of Bolsonaro’s homophobia – which activists blame for a rise in anti-LGBT violence – when Brazil’s president suggested to supporters the governor might have concealed federal resources in his anus. Leite told TV Globo he was considering whether to file a criminal complaint.

The chief delegate of the Homicide and Personal Protection Division (DHPP), Camila Cecconello, explained that the suspect will now be questioned at the police station. “He was arrested by DHPP officers around 7 am and is being taken to the police station, where he will be questioned about the facts. And soon after, Chief Thiago will give a press conference to give more details about this arrest and about the suspect's interrogation ”, she said. The victim's victims are David Júnior Alves Levisio, killed on April 27, and Marco Vinício Bozzana da Fonseca, murdered on May 4, both in the capital of Paraná. He is also suspected of the death of Robson Olivino Paim, on April 16, in Abelardo da Luz (SC). Still on May 11, the man tried to kill another homosexual, in the Bigorrilho neighborhood, in Curitiba. At the time, the victim managed to resist the attack, but had some assets stolen. All the victims were homosexuals and lived alone. The three men were found dead on the bed of their homes with signs of suffocation and had belongings taken away. According to the investigations, the serial killer scheduled meetings using gay relationship apps. At first, the individual exchanged photos with the victims and later traveled to the residence, when they arrived at the place, strangled them. After suffocation, then covered them covers.

If the USA only require the antigen test, instead of PCR test, you can go to PACHECO drogaria, result in 15 minutes and cost $R 120.00 but I dont know which PACHECO branch in SP do it, they dont do in every stores.

I cannot imagine how difficult is it is for people in Brazil right now and I'm so sick of complaints from fellow North Americans about how inconvenient it is to travel to their winter home in Florida right now.

I just got back to Rio today... got the RT-PCR in California last Tuesday... paid $120 to expedite the results, and got the results in 8 hours (that night), for a flight on Thursday night. The airline people do seem to check the dates of the test results so they adhere to 72 hours. This is a requirement only to get on a flight to Brazil. At immigration in GIG, they didn't ask for anything, one stamp and I was on my way.
On another note, I was at 117 tonight, and a guy who I have never met before approached me and told me "I think I know who you are." I guessed that he knew me from my writings here, and was actually surprised that I was that descriptive on my physical apperance as well as my choices in the sauna in my writings, for just anyone to guess who I am if they saw me in real life. It was a scary thought. But the cat's out of the bag now, so I can't do anything about this.
And even though I was soon dripping with embarassment because he told me what he thought about my writings here (he liked it!), he began lamenting that he would never be able to read them again. Of course I asked why, since it is a public forum and anyone can read what was written here. He told me that he never really signed up for an account here, and found the 10 post minimum to be a barrier to his passive involvement in the site. I told him that I was eager to write again about the trips I've been taking these past month, but told him admittedly that the smaller reading audience gives me some pause on whether it was worth it to do so.
I encouraged him to create an account and post to get access to my "blog writings". He didn't think he would, he said, and we just left it at that. I did appreciate the compliments he gave to my crazy ramblings, and felt it is a shame that he won't be enjoying these going forward. He asked me if I could just go ahead and start a personal blog so that everyone can see these again, and he had other suggestions for me that I am truly going to think about.
At the end of the day, this is not my forum, and I feel lucky that we still have this venue to get this info and to be able to live vicarioulsy through others. And since I have the fortune to actually know @TotallyOzand count him as a friend, in real life, I know that his reasons on these changes are justified. I will probably continue the writing here, even with the smaller audience, as it is in the process of writing, not the actual amount of eyeballs that get to read it, that give me the most joy out of the process.
P.S. Holy fucking god, it is a buyer's market here. As in 10 boys to one client tonight... More on this... someday.

Bahia definitely does not remind me of Atlanta, where I currently live OR Harlem where I lived....there are tons of Afro Brazilians but the city, the food, the vibe is nothing like either of those metropolitan cities/areas...

I do! I haven't had any in several years.  Today - 15 August - is the anniversary of India's independence in 1947. So several weeks ago I suggested here at the nursing home that we have Indian food today. Didn't happen. So I cancelled my dinner here and ordered Indian food from a local Indian restaurant and had it delivered. There are a number of Indian staff here.

There was a guy at Pointe sauna who agreed to just about everything but rimming. He would n't even let me look at what seemed to be  a wonderful ass.

We all know better than to take the varied medical advice that posters love giving, so my statement that rimming is safe and fun should be taken with a grain of salt. Never rim with salt on either end. That's good advice too, but don't follow it, follow your doctor's advice.
My doctor once told me that rimming was God's gift to gay men! He did!

To me , that's a laugh riot, considering NONE of Trumps cabinet had ANY qualification for their position other than they were either his spawn, his loyalists or his donors.

I totally agree. I was really hoping for Ambassador to UN or Sec. of State. But, Uncle Joe is nothing if but boring.
