I strongly doubt Adm. Fallon was naive about the potential impact of the article on his career. Apparently his reticence has been ongoing for some time.

I'm pleased that he had the honor to make his differences public and take the fallout rather than go-along-to-get-along that many other military leaders engaged in in the run up to the Iraq War and the unmitigated disaster it became after victory was declared. Hats off to Adm. Fallon, and Gen. Shinseki who were prepared to pay the price for daring to speak truth to power, as they saw it.
