I guess I'd trust Amazon more than other brands, but... why? What's the point, I wonder? I got so creeped out by Facebook policies, I'm looking all kinds of gift horses in the mouth now.

I'd much rather just back up stuff on flash drives I can control than have my files in the hands of a random company.

Since they sell songs I wonder what would happen if you accidentally moved a pirated song into their cloud storage?

I'm wary about putting personal files on third party storage. I also do not like depending on them to hold the only back-up copy of valuable information. I dont control them and their procedures. They could be hacked, go out of business, suffer catastrophic failure, or data mine your files depending on the fine print of the agreement. In this day when even Google reads your email it doesn't pay to trust these companies too far.

Given that DVDs are dirt cheap and hold 4.7 GB or 8.5 GB each, I prefer to keep my data/files in hand so that I control my destiny. FWIW

Agree with you on having your own storage at home. I do and make sure I back up regularly. But, unfortunately, that won't do you much good in case of a fire.

I pay $60 per year for unlimited off-site storage. I encrypt all my personal and confidential data before it goes into their storage and I feel better knowing I can access it (if needed) while traveling or maintaining 2 households.

I would not trust cloud storage at all. I'm also concerned about the potential of the music industry allowing iTunes and maybe Amazon to offer unlimited "cloud" access to music. If they do that, I think that will be the downfall of the music industry. The ability for any artist to make money on music will completely collapse (IMO) and only the big stars who can tour will make any money. I'm assuming that they believe that unlimited access will eliminate the need to pirate music but in the process they will de-value the rest of the music market.

I think we've already hit the point where the only way for artists to make real money is through touring.

There have been tons of articles lately to the effect that they make very little in royalties but make tons of money off of merchandise, the vast majority of it sold at concerts.
