May 29, 201115 yr There has been a lot in the papers recently after a famous newscaster from MSNBC was suspended for a bit for calling one gal a slut. That brought up many reactions from all over the nation. However, is that something to be suspended for? Fired for? http://www.salon.com/life/sex/index.html?story=%2Fmwt%2Ffeature%2F2011%2F05%2F28%2Fslut
May 30, 201115 yr The thing is that women have to deal with the constant fear of rape the same way we have to deal with the constant fear of gay bashing. Use of the word "slut" can be an aggressive term that contributes to a culture that makes women feel like they live in a culture that justifies rape the same way the word "faggot" can contribute to a culture that justifies kicking the shit out of us. First you use language to dehumanize a victim class because that makes it easier to hurt them physically.
May 30, 201115 yr I think Ed Schultz of MSNBC was wrong to use the term "Right-Wing Slut" to describe a conservative female radio talk show host. He was out of line but it says more about him than it does about her. But to be suspended?????? not sure how I feel about that one. The whole thing is really much ado about nothing IMO. The word slut can be used in many ways, both humorous and derogatory, it really depends on whose is using it and who they are referring to and in what context. Other words can bring similar reactions depending on circumstances. Bitch, fag, prick, the "N" word etc. But on a slow news day - jump on the bandwagon, here's something we can fill space with.......
May 30, 201115 yr If Glenn Beck referred to one of his guests as a "left wing cum bucket faggot", would you feel it more or less newsworthy? Screamin' Ed really doesn't offer much intellectually. So, I guess the pony show is necessary to keep his viewers turned in.

I don't feel anything Glenn Beck says is newsworthy - in any way - other than if he made a promise to "off" himself and take Sarah with him.........

Sean Hannity? Mike Huckabee? I used Beck as a comparison because I consider his style as closest to Screamin' Ed's style. Screamin' Ed is pretty much inconsequential to anyone other than the 4000 people who watch his show every night.

Screamin' Ed is pretty much inconsequential to anyone other than the 4000 people who watch his show every night. Yeah. I know this is probably not the case, but I feel like his down-home southern thing is a way to "trick" people into thinking he's actually conservative, you know? Like, "I ain't one of them east coast eliteists, I tell it like it is!" But he's left. I dunno, maybe it just fucks with my own preconceived notions.
May 31, 201115 yr I see little difference between a television personality calling a woman a slut or a man a faggot. Both are newsworthy because the personality who says it needs to be publicly shamed. "Slut" and "faggot" both mean essentially the same thing - that you are less than human because you like cock. That's not an attitude that should be considered acceptable in any circumstance.

Civility has been so lost in our political debate over the last 15 years. It's very sad.
June 1, 201115 yr I also think it's time we got sex negative words out of the discourse. If she was being a bitch, call her a bitch, not a slut.
