July 31, 201313 yr Active Members Had my regular checkup the other day and my doctor has been after me to get a colonoscopy for the last year. I finally acquiesced and agreed despite my intense fears of the unknown. I don't know anyone who has had one that I can talk to about the procedure to alleviate my fears. So can anyone here tell me about the experience and was it as bad as you thought or not so much? I've scheduled it for a month from now, which may have been a mistake but I figure I need some time to get mentally prepared. Yes, I am a big sissy when it comes to these types of things and I readily admit it. Nevertheless, be brutally honest if you have had this procedure as I would rather know up front the worst part of it than let my mind go wild and come up with its own worst case scenario (which is pretty scary).
July 31, 201313 yr I've had two. I had one at 45 and I had one at 50 (last year). The second time I had full anesthesia and I would prefer that but most insurance companies won't pay for full anesthesia so you have to get approval first. But the first time I was awake and watched on the screen while he was in there. It's really a non-event frankly and afterwards you will wonder what you fretted over. It will give you peace of mind though.

August 4, 201313 yr I was given Verset to ensure that I remembered nothing of the procedure, but it didn't have that effect on me. For whatever reason, I was completely awake and enthusiastically talkative through the entire procedure. The doctor actually had to ask me to shut up because I was asking too many questions. I watched the entire thing on video as it was being performed and it was really quite fascinating but otherwise uneventful and totally painless. The scope itself was quite small, hardly wider than a pinky finger, though of course quite a bit longer The worst part for me, and when I say worst I mean only slightly unpleasant, were the preparation stage to get everything cleaned out, and the intravenous drip needle insertion into my arm (only because I hate needles).
