October 3, 20214 yr Sadly this is something you can place part of the blame on the Constitution written for the Japanese by the Americans after World War 2. Article 175 of the Japanese Penal Code states that it is illegal to share "indecent materials." Consequently photos of genitalia are not permitted and anyone found distributing such material in Japan will be faced with a very hefty fine or jailed. Porn producers found a way round that by introducing pixelation. Some producers have tried to fight the law. In probably the first case in 2004, one was found guilty and fined. He appealed to a higher court which upheld the guilty verdict and tripled the fine! There are some Japanese gay porn vdos without pixelation but they are almost all primarily aimed at overseas markets or produced overseas. I believe there are machines you can buy in Japan that unpixelate vdos but they are expensive! What makes all this especially sad is that Japan has a centuries long history of sexual openness which included gay sex. Erotica in the form of explicit wood block prints called shunga were especially popular and seen everywhere. These leave nothing to the imagination and generally included enlarged penises in some form of insertion. But then, after being closed from the world for nearly 250 years during the Shogun era, the west arrived in the form of the US navy, following in their wake an army of Christian missionaries/religious zealots who were shocked at such sexual freedoms, as they were also to note in many other parts of Asia and set to work changing them. Japan quickly realised that most things western were good, so attitudes to sex and displays of sexuality quickly changed. It is all rather extraordinary in a country where a gazillion manga are bought and read by all sectors of society. Many of these have extremely explicit sexual drawings. Even more odd, there is a long standing culture in Japan that you see, but do not see! So the young lady standing on the commuter train may see a much older salaryman reading a very explicit manga with sexual images, but tradition means she does not really see it and it is forgotten. Given that so many of the young Japanese guys are so cute - as one can easily see on the several host bar websites (one example of just a few of the boys available at one Tokyo host bar below), it is really unfortunate that the hugely valuable gay porn industry is so handicapped.
