My best source for international flying seems to be Kayak.com. They search a lot of sites, and then show you the trip ordered by cost. Looking through them you find some interesting deals and some strange fares.

I looked at the expedia site. I note that fares for the 3 non-stop carriers - Qantas, British Airways and THAI - are virtually identical at 678, 688 and 689 respectively. I wonder if there is a little cartel operating there!

for the purposes of this thread I entered Dep LHR 14 Oct/Dep BKK 4 Nov and the cheapest is with Etihad (via Abu Dhabi) - £381 inc taxes.

 

Oman Air came in at £387 inc. on the same search.

 

For those who can stomach the thought, another often very cheap option with high baggage allowances (30kg in economy/ 50kg in business) is with Bangladesh Biman Airlines - best thing is to call travel agents in and around Brick Lane, E1 or Green Street, E13. I have flown on a variety of routes with Biman over the years, in and out of Dhaka, and it really isn't that bad.

 

Perversely the cabin crew seem to view caucasians as minor royalty, so while they scream at the Bengalis, if you are white, you will be treated to a personal Maharajah service Of course you will probably be the only non-Bengali on board!

My source for cheap rates is Matrix from ITA - it is direct terminal which is connected to many airline's servers... so I can see fares and purchase tickets which aren't published on websites. As well it can search for cheapest price in 30 day from "first possible day of travel" - you need just mark how long you need to stay in point of destination...
