True  long time since I have had 2 bad experiences and only the 2nd time in 15 years , I have had a thief.  Last one was 3 years ago and I got sloppy with protecting my things . That will now be fixed!!

Than don't feel bitter as it looks from your sizable statistic sample that you have almost always good luck.

Hope your loss is not painful.

Unfortunately from time to time those things are bound to happen as our possessions may be tempting to boys we are letting in.

Thanks God , never had this kind of experience with Thai boys even if on few occasions I left unguarded money in the room, including 9000 when I left boy alone in the room for 15 minutes and went to recover bag I left at Telephone, not a baht missing even if at least 2000 was in 100 baht notes .

I wouldn't want to test a boy with such temptation vin. Frankly, I wouldn't want to trust a farang either. I have known many

that steal, lie and cheat. Fortunately, relatively easy to avoid flim-flam shifty farangs if you don't get drunk with barflies

and avoid instant best new friends. Another subject for another thread and time.

It was not deliberate , I just run and realized that money was left on my way back to hotel . Did not stressed myself with thinking if he took something as I trusted him not to comb through my backpack and rightly so. I was with him before. Checked cash only after breakfast when boy left and I returned to the room .

Agree with not trusting farangs, I have some stories to this effect from my travels but those are not gay and not Thailand stories either. It's old wisdom than when you are backpacking biggest threat to your possessions comes from fellow travelers, not locals.

Pity there's no face pic on his GR profile.  All it needs is one ID change and anyone here could hire him.

I ask him for a face pic and this is the result

if he is your type there's always option of short time hotel to exploit his better side there instead in your room

Even if my possessions were stored securely, I prefer not to hire a known thief on principle.

you are right , it would be kind of insulting for firecat, who reported theft first

Rather than labeling a boy a thief, I would call him an opportunist . You would be shocked at what some farangs do when

opportunity knocks and no one is looking. A gold necklace left out will tempt many and of course currency left out is a gift.

There's an old story of a farang who would leave a phony gold Rolex out and go shower. Often he would leave the shower

and the boy and the phony Rolex were gone. Faux Rolex costs him 300b. And he had bought many to play his game.

I know of farang that put their check bin in another farangs while he takes a leak. Bar flies far worst than the boys.

At least when a boy borrows money, you know it's a gift.

Of course, some boys are far more opportunistic than others and should be avoided at all costs.

When you take something that does not belong to you, you are a Thief.  Really very simple. Makes no difference if some farangs are thieves , or some Thai boys are thieves.  Having been with hundreds of boys over the last 15 years , there were many opportunities had the boys been thieves.

But all but 2 did not take whatever opportunity there was in front of them .  The two that did are THIEVES.  Plain and Simple

If they steal from one person then they may steal from the next customer and as such we need to do what we can to warn others!!

I happen to believe the overwhelming % of Thais are honest people. I have had small change and big bills returned from laundry a number of times. I have had people chase me down in the street because I left something at the table.

But that is why 2 were able to steal something substantial from me because I do believe in the honesty of the boys and am not always as careful as I should be.

Still 2 in hundreds over 15 years ,  I will not allow them to change my opinion of the boys I meet.

Well at the end of the day, the lesson is learnt.

None of us should even "tempt" the invite with our worldly possession.

Everyone is assumed guilty unless proven otherwise (and vice versa).

With only 2 more days to go, I am all excited of this impending trip to Pattaya.

I secured my accomodation and yes, it is within walking distance from the Boyztown area.

**Lucky for the Western farangs, I am not into Thai boys..

I will probably give the Thais a run for their money.. or their potential friends.

A reasonable and logical view, firecat69... it has to do with people's core morals and beliefs, and those can be altered by exposure to the morals of others and/or the situations life drops people into.

A Rented Admirer in immediate need of cash who's been beaten down by a cheapskate from the normal 1,000Bt to 400Bt for a roll in the hay has been stolen from, too. By definition, someone bragging about writing off their trip on their tax return as "business" because they looked at trinkets one afternoon to re-sell back home is a thief; just as someone eating six grapes in the grocery store as a sample with no intent of buying a pound of them is. It's all a matter of  the degree of the person's personal morals, I'd say.

It reminds me of the old story of a man asking a woman at the bar "Would you sleep with me for a million dollars?" When she says "Yes, I suppose I would," he counters with "how about ten dollars?"  She replies in a huff "what do you think I AM?" and he says "we've already established that... now we're just haggling over the price".

No, No, No, that is not at all true.

He has not been stolen from, rather he has been exploited.

However, providing the fee was agreed in advance, he's consented to that.

I stand corrected. It's despicable, but if a deal was struck, it IS a deal, I agree - but I stand behind the rest of the thoughts. Theft and exploitation are pretty darn close relatives, though. . .

Baobao makes a good point. Of course the boy was a thief but so are those that cheat on taxes, don't return money

when a cashier gives back too much change, even those who go after another farangs boyfriend.

My point was that opportunity and deprivation are conditions that can turn anyone into a thief. It doesn't lessen

the boys actions but tries to explain why.

I also see baobao's point that a farang who cheats a boy by promising more money than they give is also a thief and

if a boy stole something from the thieving farang, it's sort of justified.

Just a different take on a bad thing.

Just to be clear here.  Price was asked by boy and agreed by me as 1000 short time.  Rarely do I only give 1000 if the performance warrants it , I always give anywhere from 1-500 extra.  Naturally 500 extra has to be extraordinary .

This boy did the bare acceptable minimum and he was paid 1000 so there was no grievance here or any remote reason for him to steal.   And we are not talking about a few thousand baht either but considerably more.

He is a Thief and in the USA he would do serious jail time if caught.

The reason for the original post is twofold.  First to warn people that he might steal from them. Second to remind everyone that it pays to protect all your valuables at all times when you have a boy in your room.

I have gotten sloppy mainly because I actually trust a lot of the boys I know and it becomes easy when it is someone new not to revert to being careful and treating each visitor with discretion.

Too bad that this lesson to all of us cost you so much .

Nothing wrong with you trusting boys as per your own admission  this is 2nd time in may years and boys.

But trust always work better if supported by the solid padlock.

At end of day probably trust is still better than being paranoid about every visitor and spoil vacation with fear.

One  of my straight  friends who is annually seriously whoring in Nana plaza and Soi Cowboy uses short time hotels only out of fear of being robbed by his girls, I think this is stupid and costs a lot of extra money too.

Did he rummage through your belongings or you just left money in easy  to reach place and he took opportunity ? Just curious
