We all need to strive to live life with the throttle wide open. With only a limited amount of worry about 'steering.' Else we will never know the limits of our abilities.

  4. Actually the English language, made of Anglo plus Saxon plus Norman words, contains about three times the number of words of most languages. Making it an extraordinarily rich language for literary expression. Of course it took the Bard to mine them all out! And invent not a few himself. I think I've also read that he had a vocabulary about three times bigger than the average Englishperson of his day.
  5. Agree. Here in Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, the numerous gay bars are today some of the most vibrant nighttime hangouts in town.

  8. YES!!! Great insight & wisdom in both those observations. 'We men are not pigs, we are just dogs.' And then, on the other side, that women still have to put up with all the shit of male-controlled...etc., etc., etc...everything. It's really a wonder that the female half (slightly over, actually) of the population does not rise up -- as has been imagined by more than one SF writer (female and male both) -- and just decide to slaughter all but a token number of the males. Or socially castrate them into a small, safe zone.
  9. I am regrettably uninformed there. I have mentioned (too often ) that I DID get edge-of-propositioned by Louis Edmonds at the 1993 Dark Shadows fan convention ShadowCon held in the Times Square Marriott in August 1993. I was a (fairly still cute then) 33yo, but did not yet have the cojones to accept his offer to Come Up and See His Etchings. As it were. (I forget his exact phrasing, which was however of course exquisitely dry, and dripping with innuendo at the same time.) My bad!
  10. Hmm! Should I Forking Force Myself to Swear More? ...In her new book Swearing Is Good for You: The Amazing Science of Bad Language, author Emma Byrne makes a strong case that, at least to some extent, the answer is yes. The British scientist writes in the book’s introduction that swearing is “socially and emotionally essential” and “beneficial to us both as individuals and as a species.” Swearing is so fundamental to human expression, she reveals, that even people with neurological conditions that cause them to lose the ability to speak regular words are still able to swear. Swearing can offer emotional catharsis and improve productivity. Her hope, she writes, is that we “might give it the respect it fucking deserves.” Cont. 22. The good news, I think (without intending any particular reference to the Christian Gospel as the Good News, as such; although who really knows in such matters?), is that these weird eddies and reversals in the social-climate current of affairs do come and go. Like how the British Victorian era gave a bad name to sex work, at least in England and then in America; which profession previously had a fairly healthily accepted 5,000-year history (at least ) before that. This too shall pass. As all things will. Who knows how, at the present moment; but they always seem to do.
