  1. To be sure, I paid them in $, food/drink, clean place to sleep/poop/wash up...but we were friends too, all I'm saying. As Bloomberg accurately said of Trump, 'I'm a New Yorker, and I know a con when I see one.' But OTOH, excessive cynicism about others' motives can ruin your life.

  3. I think there is more to it than that... ...many hiring guys in NYC had way more scoots to offer than I did. But the strip-club kids who liked me I think found me funny, weird, not (too much! ) a creep, interesting over lunch the next day...so went home with me. (Even showed up uninvited in the dark of night, as heretofore described.) @Tomcal is very obviously that way with his guys, many times multiplied!

  10. If I had him in bed, I don't think politics is what would be in my mouth.
  11. Beyond ridiculous. Political correctness in this country has grown from a national disease to almost the equivalent of the Black Death. And pro-PC freaks would likely howl like demented hyenas [is there any other kind, come to think? ] for my even using that term.
  12. No question. I have a pair of volume-adjustable hearing aids, and under that amplification much contemporary film sound just gets more visibly (audibly) terrible. Come to think, in NYC I used to sit and drink with a guy who was the sound tech for Martha Stewart's TV show, and he remarked the same thing you did: What has happened to sound production in film? He didn't know either, except the evident technical inattention and ineptness of too many of today's directors. ...Makes this worth a repost...

Dave: 'All right, then, I'll go in through the emergency airlock.' HAL: 'Without your space helmet, Dave, you're going to find that rather difficult.' ...Having done this oneself some eight or so times in life course thus far (age 58), actually not too difficult at all. Just must want it, and thrust through. https://www.space.com/18422-apollo-saturn-v-moon-rocket-nasa-infographic.html

This physicist, Gell-Mann, is so incredibly great. Intellect, + humane self-understanding of the ego issues of managing being brilliant.

  21. P.S. Sorry not to have anecdotes of meeting Ellison at some fan con and he hitting me up (he was straight, far as I know) in the manner that Louis Edmonds honored yer AS at the 1993 Dark Shadows Festival.
  22. The anthology Dangerous Visions curated by Ellison forever changed SF. And then Again Dangerous Visions.
  23. Harlan Ellison obituary Short story writer who regenerated the science fiction genre in the US To some, Harlan Ellison was the finest short story writer to have emerged from America’s science fiction ghetto in generations. The Los Angeles Times described him as “the 20th-century Lewis Carroll”; JG Ballard thought he was “an aggressive and restless extrovert who conducts life at a shout and his fiction at a scream”; Robert Bloch, author of Psycho, called him “the only living organism I know whose natural habitat is hot water”. ...
