I enjoyed the best of all possible worlds during my youth. I was squired about by "uncles"starting at 16. Our trips to SF usually included a trip to the P.S. and I was thril;led to see the buffet of manflesh available for a price. I started going to SF on my own as soon as I had a drivers license!Usually under the pretense of attending a Ballet or Opera.I was regular on Polkstasse in no time at all(yes I had a fake ID-but I was really cute back then and that opened a lot of doors)and continued to be so until I moved away from SF in the early 90's.By then it was a sad shadow of its former life. There were so many FUN FUN FUN bars in the good old days=There was a bar on Polk Street called the New Belle Saloon where David Kelsey(RIP) would entertain us on a theater organ and a grad piano-sometimes playing both at once! David was sometimes joined by a all gay band called Pure Trash=all of them adorable young guys. The P.S,The Giraffe,Kimos,The QT,Reflections-where I saw Ertha Kitt do her Cabaret act- so much more enjoyable than the gay bars of today IMO. There was also a very divey bar called Oil Can Harrys on Ellis and Larkin that catered to "chicken and rice" queens=you could get into the "juice bar"secton if you were 16 and you got a wristband.If you were over 21 you could go int the regular bar-which was seperated from the juice bar section by a wall of plexiglass.Of course if you got friendly with an adult he would pour a regular drink into one of the plastic glasses used in the juice bar section. It breaks my heart to visit the site former haunts in SF when I visit now. The Castro bores me to tears these days and 95% of the bars in the other parts of town have either closed or gone straight. And I won't even start about the movie theatres and peep shows,,,,,,, I have a feeling New York had the same sort of fun places,I have a friend who worked in some of the old hustler bars-and maybe a lot of other large cities did also. We will never see this again I am afraid.

I had a Five Guys burger and fries for the first time last night,I thought it was fine except the bun is not sturdy enough to support the fillings.The fries were very good-but way too big of a portion for one person. I had been to Five guys before-for a hot dog and I actually prefer thier hot dogs to their hamburgers.

This year has seen the lodging chains/airlines cutting way back on the promotions offered to their frequent customers. Hyatt abandonned their usuall Free Frequent Night promotion for the first time in six years. Starwood had a very good promotion=three nights stay got you a free night at one of their high end resorts,which is great for those that like resorts-which I don't.Both of theese chains are ending the year on very dull notes which is making me question my loyalty to Starwood for the first time in four years. This persuit of elite status with three chains(I also keep Marriott mid tier) has greatly reduced my budget for the sort of expenses this board is attuned to.Namely my hiring of service providers has dropped dramaticly in the past 3 years.This is actually good timing because my libido has dropped as well as a result of middle age so a comfy bed means more to me than what goes on in that bed! I have also dropped most of my airline status as well-air travel is a hassle for fat guys-and I just am not up to the challenge most days. I still manage to travel a lot more than anyone in my family-and most of the general population.But I am not as driven about this crazy hobby of mine as I used to be.But it is a hard habit to give up completely.

Last year Hyatt wanted to attract a LOT of people to its hotels and frequent guest program. This was in anticipation of Hyatt going public(The Pritzkers want to spin it off)and also to bulk up their mailing list for the Chase credit card they issued late in 2010. The bonuses and promos were VERY generous-ridicoulously so in some cases.If I would have jumped on the Hyatt bandawgon sooner I could have gotten much more in bonus point. So yes-it took me sixteen stays averageing $100 each via a challenge to make Diamond.And each of those stays had a very generous amount of bonus points and even some free nights. My points from last year went towards five nights at The Park Hyatt. The rates during my stay were around $700 a night. I also got a lovely free breakfast for two every morning(which runs 45 EU per person )and since it was a points stay-no taxes! This year sadly-Hyatt is being ultra stingy with their bonuses.But I have enough points already for 4 nights at the new Hyatt at 48th and Lexington in October

Happy to be able to choose between three hotel loyalty programs in which I have points for times when NYC or other locales are beyond my budget. Really makes whatever savings Priceline/Hotels.com etc,,, provides look very meager IMO last year I spent around $1,600 with Hyatt to acheive Diamond status and earn enough points for 5 nights in Paris(a $4,000 value) October in NYC will also be on points since rooms are running over $300 a night for dumps.I will be staying at a the brand new Hyatt 48th an Lex! Oh did I mention as a Diamond I get free breakfast?
