After spending a wonderful week in Salvador in mid-August, I took a two-hour flight north to São Luís for a long weekend. The city is well worth a short visit. I enjoyed wandering through the historic centre, which seemed better maintained than most other Brazilian cities, and felt safe walking around during the day, particularly on the main shopping street. Unfortunately, the beaches were disappointing—the seawater was cloudy and green, and the sand was hard and compacted. Even so, I enjoyed dining in high-end restaurants along the beachfront near Ponta d’Areia each evening. I also visited the GP sauna, Go.61, which turned out to be a lot of fun with a good selection of GP. Located within the historic district, the sauna occupies a large two-story house. The ground floor offers an excellent steam room and features a dark room, where plenty of action takes place. There was also a lukewarm sauna, a murky swimming pool (locals mentioned it was rarely used), a large bar, ample outdoor seating, and a stage. The client changing room is in a separate room, while the GP lockers are located in the main corridor, making it easy to check out the arriving GP.
