International oil purchases are generally settled in US dollars. In 2019, Thailand paid out $22.3 billion for imported oil. But consumption has slackened off significantly so there is a corresponding reduced need for imports and for dollars to pay for them. Thailand was the 13th largest importer, just behind Singapore and just ahead of Taiwan.
