The romance of the Scottish sleeper train

I shouldn't have thought that it would take "all night" to cross Scotland by rail but, of course, if one starts in the south of England (London) then traversing two "countries" might indeed take that long.  I once took a train from Newcastle to Cheltenham  which pretty much goes from NE England to SW England but that took only a few hours (3 or so). And, no, I did not bring any coals when I arrived in Newcastle, only a little airplane. 

Trains are amazing and so is Scotland.

Why would anyone want to sleep through the beautiful Scottish scenery? I've been there 5 times and never tire of it.

I think the idea is to take the overnighter in one direction, where there are some time blocks of evening and morning scenery, but the capacity to kill some of the travel time while asleep, then arrange a more daytime travel schedule for the other direction, with less of the nostalgic amenities and less missed scenery. 

I believe I read recently somewhere that Scotland is rated the top destination for scenery ... I think Canada was 2nd.

Also learned that a lot of Norman names are legitimately bound to Scottish clan tartans. I am not Scottish but my name (anglicized French) is one of many linked to the Campbell tartan, and is also the same as a town in Scotland.
