I am considerably over that age limit and both worked perfectly. @Patanawet - where did you get that info? You give no source. I do remember when the Rabbit card was first introduced for the Skytrain, we had to show our passports and a limit of Bt. 4,000 was placed on the maximum stored value. You used you 'elder card' on the subway BUT did it only charge you 50% this time or full fare? Last year sometime I tried to top up my BTS card and the cashier said "50 baht extra for new card". She explained that cards only last 7 years (I think). Didn't have to show my passport. Quote

Yes, it's true that foreign seniors (and other foreign travelers) are no longer eligible for discounted MRT fares in Bangkok. The MRT has discontinued the elder card and other discount cards for non-Thai citizens. This means that seniors, students, and children are no longer entitled to discounts. The MRT now requires all passengers to pay the full fare, regardless of age or nationality. Quote

Same when I used it a couple of days ago. My guess is that as long as you have the old cards, perhaps you are charged only the 50% rate.
