frazzle Posted October 17 Posted October 17 There's talk on TikTok and Facebook that Medellin airport is singling out males traveling alone from the United States, pulling them aside for secondary screening, inspecting phones, denying entry, etc. I don't know how true this is. Supposedly it's to combat pedophiles but really anything showing you intend to have sex or hookup there is being used as a reason to deny entry. Latbear4blk 1 Quote
Members Traveler365 Posted October 17 Members Posted October 17 Just entered there--other than nearly 2 hour wait there was nothing unusual. I even had a booth that had a "supervisor" and was processed in about 30 seconds once I got to the front of the line. Latbear4blk, vinapu and Mavica 3 Quote

Members macdaddi Posted October 18 Members Posted October 18 I think the bigger story is the lack of border agents in Rionegro airport (that serves Medellín). The lines at customs can take hours waiting to be processed as a foreign visitor. In Bogotá I can usually get through customs in 20 minutes. There are flights to Medelllín basically every 40 minutes starting at 430am There have been multiple arrests where children were being held captive for prostitution with foreigners, most recently at a smaller hotel in El Poblado in May 2024. The Colombian government is rightfully very concerned about becoming a sex tourism destination and continue to do more surveillance in areas popular with tourists. The cameras you see on every street corner in El Poblado? Those are just barely one year old. FWIW According to the alcaldía, 57% of foreign travelers arriving to the city are single males, average age of 37.7 years. Travelers from the USA made up the largest group, at around 42% of all visitors to the city. PeterRS, floridarob, vinapu and 1 other 4 Quote

If it was one video I'd be skeptical. But it's Facebook posts and comments with people using their real name. Similar rumblings on Reddit and elsewhere. It's really not unbelievable either... there's some tension between the US and Colombia right now. Quote

Nothing close to the full-on searches, long detentions, or “come back tomorrow” treatment plenty of travellers get when they land in the States. Welcome to the real world. Same story everywhere: a lot of regular people get blamed for things they never supported. Many Americans are catching the same kind of heat now. Sad times, really. Mavica and Latbear4blk 2 Quote
Members Primeone385 Posted 12 hours ago Members Posted 12 hours ago @Latbear4blk I guess what I am pointing out is that tiktok instagram or facebook are not traditional news sources. They often get used for disinformation. Thats why I am using GroundNews for better non bias news. So I can atleast make better decisions when dealing with politics or current events in America and other countries. It might help those MAGA people that voted for the orange baboon to get a clearer and more truthful understanding about whats happening to them. https://ground.news/landingV8/free-trial-joe-biden-ground-news-neutral-news?utm_source=joe-biden&utm_campaign=21368975452-neutral news&utm_medium=ga-trial&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21368975452&gbraid=0AAAAABp2GQ1jBmF1K3SYxNzmoZJLMh8O_ Latbear4blk 1 Quote

I think I was making the same point. Yes, occasionally the news in social media are accurate, but they are the same news that you can find in more reliable sources. Primeone385 1 Quote
