PeterRS Posted Sunday at 02:49 AM Posted Sunday at 02:49 AM The Ruen Urai restaurant in the Rose Hotel off Suriwong (close to its new building and at the end of the swimming pool) has been a favourite of many readers for years. Last night, Friday, as I have done every time he has visited Bangkok for over a dozen years I took a friend there for dinner. For the first time the restaurant was totally empty apart from the owner at one table and the two of us at another. It is in the medium expensive category. Our bill for drinks and three courses came to Bt. 1,943. It is a lovely venue for dinner, but I fear if it gets no customers on a Friday evening, the end may be nigh. I sincerely hope not. Quote
vinapu Posted Sunday at 03:14 AM Posted Sunday at 03:14 AM that's both good and bad news. I never dined there because in the past on two occasions when my party showed up at the door without reservation we were sent away as the place was full or fully booked Quote
hank75 Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago I’ve been there years ago and can’t say I’m keen to go back. It was a very nice restaurant though the food didn’t leave much of an impression. Felt more suitable for tourists, rather than dining with a local guy or two. I remember bringing a guy there and from the look on his face I could tell he thought it was overpriced, food cooked for farang tastes, and he just wasn’t comfortable with the more formal setting. Also 7-8 years ago there was a real shortage of decent Thai restaurants in the area especially around the Surawong side if you didn’t feel like having Japanese or Burger King or beer bar food. Now there are quite a few good casual restaurants near Soi 4 and Park Silom so I’m not surprised business has fallen off. Quote
