I’m not a great fan of Donki in Silom, it’s a pale cousin to its Japan megastores (and I am a huge fan of Bic Camera in Japan too) When Donki first opened next to Sala Daeng BTS the Japanese restaurant on the second floor was terrific. They had chefs in from Japan and were serving excellent cuts of sashimi for very good pricing. The boy I was with then had a real love for sashimi and anxiously awaited my arrival each time so I could treat him to dinner, which I did with pleasure since it was such good value. However a few months later the Japanese chefs (who were likely only there to get the place up and running) disappeared, the quality plummeted as they probably discovered they could make more money selling cheaper cuts of fish to a Thai audience who weren’t as discerning.

Mae Kampong is a small village (it is literally just the one big street uphill with lanes branching out) so you should plan 2-3 other stops since you’re driving there from Chiang Mai: Kew Fin viewpoint, strawberry farms, waterfalls to make a day of it. You also want to go there peckish since the roadside stalls sell all sorts of northern snacks including ‘Sai ua ’ circular grilled sausages, honeycomb, and so on. One of the most popular things to do is to have shabu (hotpot) or mookata (Thai bbq) at Kao Ba Fueang (เก๊าบ่าเฟือง) which supposedly has the best views of Mae Kampong street. It can get busy but worth a try. I was lucky enough to be given the exact second floor balcony seat with the viewpoint that has gone viral and it was a great experience (the food was - okay). To be more precise, you get a great panoramic view of Mae Kampong and also face the large cannabis signboard that sticks out like a sore thumb amidst the rustic and charming village. Rabiang View Cafe is also worth a visit. If you have your own transport, would be better to take that than walk.

Seconded, great idea. While Bangkok has amazing rooftop views there’s really something about seeing an expanse of city ringed by mountains. Thanks for sharing pics. Another excursion option is a day trip to Mon Jam or Mae Kampong. Mon Jam has beautiful views, flower gardens, animal farms and a great lookout point at Skywalk Monjam (complete with Buddha Hand for a photo op). When I was there, I was lucky enough to come across some local hill tribe festivity with a small street market and wooden go karts, so we took a spin with the local boys.

Don’t worry I enjoy Vietnam too. Cute boys, great food, good weather, many things to like. I just prefer Thailand more. The one thing I absolutely despise about Vietnam is the incessant honking, the congestion, the complete disregard for traffic rules. Let’s just say crossing Surawong Road in front of Le Meridien, which is already nerve wracking, is far better than crossing any street in Vietnam.

What’s stopping you from using both? Saving the environment?? 😆 Actually that really IS my preference, a good Japanese style ass wash rounded off with paper. In fact as @Travelingguy just said, the 100% ideal would be wash, blow dry and paper down. Just need a shave and polish to be as good as a car wash. And yes I appreciate Le Meridien’s facilities….its surprising how many far more expensive 5-star hotels in Bangkok do not have a bidet function.

Also I find it interesting that no one shares my taste in men. Ah well more for me I suppose.

I think this sort of aggressive comment which suggests borderline doxxing of a member’s privacy is unwarranted and not in the spirit of this forum. How would you have received feedback from Chiang Mai guys had you not been enquiring about @aaroninatl ’s activities there? Even if unsolicited from the boys (though I find it hard to believe they would single out an unrelated, individual farang to gossip about long distance for no reason) you can close one ear and not drag this into an open forum. If you find aaroninatl’s posts and behavior triggering there is no need to continuously engage.

Thank you sharing, it’s very sad indeed. The shark attacks hit home because now the warm weather is back, my friend was just suggesting a sailing trip. Needless to say I’ll be staying off the water for a while. As for the kill order, I read on another message board (written by someone privy to the decision making process) that it was put in place because while the victim’s body hasn’t been recovered, the shark was sighted with a visible dismembered leg caught on its teeth. The family pleaded for his remains so they had something to bury. All things considered - the proximity to shore, the shark’s intent to hunt, and the possibility of more people seeing the distressing sight of a shark swimming around with human remains protruding from its mouth - they made the difficult call to kill on sight. I’ll keep this brief as I could - boringly - go on all day. The sharks in Thailand are of the more docile and shy variety, rather than the great white or bull sharks found in Australia. Surfing is also a major sport, people even go surfing in famously shark-infested waters in order to chase the perfect reef break.

I usually just get routine cleaning done. I even take my regular guy along since I know for a fact he skimps the brushing when he’s not with me. However I think I need a crown put in on my next trip, which will be my first proper dental work in Thailand. I also considered veneers but I don’t like the part where they shave your teeth down. Thailand does beautiful veneers though so it’s tempting.

Quite randomly I read the explanation for this on another forum just yesterday. Apparently if you have low blood pressure, the exertion of going to the toilet can cause “defecation syncope” or fainting in the toilet, due to overstimulation of the nervous system. If you live with low blood pressure (hypotension) your system adapts to your daily routine but if you have a sudden drop of pressure or there’s anything that causes extra straining in the toilet such as activated charcoal triggering bowel congestion, it’s a medical emergency. Or perhaps the simplest explanation is that it makes old people constipated which is undesirable no matter how you look at it. On a side note @a-447 I read up about the shark attack you mentioned. Terrifying since it appears the shark was actually out hunting for prey that close to shore. And the ongoing uproar over the kill order issued by the government. I too will stop derailing the thread now! It’s hard because @aaroninatl’s lively reports open up all kinds of interesting topics.

If Cam is the only way to contact Jimmie my humble suggestion would be to enquire about a boy who has returned to build his house and not mention any personal details. Starting with the boys from Battambang is best as they all know each other. And while they may not discuss boyfriends or foreign sponsors, if one person is building a house, buying a truck or starting a business there’s quite alot of chat about it and accompanying Facebook posts. Some boys are reluctant to mention they have a farang boyfriend or sponsor as if word gets back to the bosses or mamasans they equate this with “windfall” I do think Jimmie would be very happy to meet a forum member in Siem Reap.

While appreciating that this thought came from a good place, yes I do think it is inappropriate and intrusive given that @jimmie50 has only been on Cambodian soil barely a week. Based on his reported travel timings, he left America Friday night/wee hours of Saturday Asia time. With a long layover he would have arrived Saturday evening, meaning his first proper day was last Sunday, a week ago. By his own words he planned to be offline and focus on real life for a bit. Give the man a chance to reunite with Cam, settle in and grasp the lay of the land. There may be some unforeseen delays such as perhaps changing of accommodation, or tech issues. Although I believe Jimmie has met with forum members before, he’s been careful about not doxxing Cam and protecting his privacy. Boys do not always share everything with their bars and “bar friends”, it may not be commonly known Cam has returned to live with a foreign boyfriend. You may be doing him a real disservice by spreading the word and getting everyone at the bar curious. If he does indeed not reappear over the next few days, this can be considered much later on. I add my good wishes to everyone else’s and hope @jimmie50 is doing well, enjoying Cambodia and accumulating stories for us ‘back home’
